City/County Co-location: Taking Care of Business
The issue of co-location has been on the minds of most everyone these days. City and county councils are concerned about the cost benefits of such a move. The Mayor and the Commissioners have concerns about functionality. The media has asked for more transparency in the process. The members of the task force struggled through personal and policy confrontations, as well as individual priorities to reach a common goal. Business leaders became frustrated with a protracted and contentious process that they felt reflected negatively on our communities’ ability to attract jobs. Through all this, the citizens of Fort Wayne and Allen County watched and wondered, not just about the end result of these discussions, but about how it will affect them in terms of taxes, ease of interaction with local government and pride in our community.

Council dealt with two interesting matters last night: the combination of 911 call centers and the future of government housing in Fort Wayne. Both showed considerable signs of progress, but with more than a few curves ahead.

It was reported late last week that the cost of using the old Wolf & Dessauer building as the new city hall has gone up, again. Well, it has gone up this time like a rocket, over 50%, from $7 million to $11 million in round figures.

In a report forced on King Henry’s administration due to a bill authored by city councilwoman Liz Brown, the city reported spending $90 an hour, or a total of $50,000 in the 4th quarter of last year to provide “specialized marketing communications services” for the city.
Or as City Controller Pat Roller called it, a “fill-in public information officer.”
