The always rabid folks over at Huffington Post blogged this entry at yesterday at 6:00 PM.

Among the myriad of disturbing qualities of James Von Brunn, the 88-year-old man who shot and killed a security officer inside the Holocaust Museum on Wednesday, is his apparent belief that Barack Obama is not a citizen of the United States and therefore has no right to the presidency.

Indeed a “birther” mindset is more a symptom of extremism than a cause.

That said, the extent to which the birther ethos has been driven into the political narrative by legitimate figures, and subsequently picked up by extremist elements, is noteworthy. In an obvious reference to questions about Obama’s birthplace, Rep. Bill Posey, R-FL, has introduced a bill in the House requiring presidential candidates to file a copy of their birth certificates. Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-V.A, has joined him as a co-sponsor of that measure.

Then Alan Colmes, who runs the blog Liberaland at Alan.com seems to have used HuffPo’s blog entry as show prep plagiarized their post. He posted the following at 8:16 PM yesterday.

As such, he was also part of the birther movement claiming there is no valid birth certificate for President Obama. The sad part about this is that we have elected officials trying to give this craziness credibility. Congressman Bill Posey of Florida introduced a bill that would require presidential candidates to file copies of birth certificates, and Rep. Bob Goodlatte of Virginia is a co-sponsor. Interesting company they keep

Colmes and HuffPo persecute two Republican congressman via an association that never existed. Amazing. HuffPo then associates Fox News’ reporting with inciting the violence.

Outside political circles, but still within the national spotlight, the view is much more widely articulated. As late as two weeks ago, for instance, Fox News was running a headline on its website, asking: “Should Obama Release Birth Certificate? Or Is This Old News?” On Wednesday morning, moreover, talk show host Rush Limbaugh sardonically compared President Obama to God, noting that, “God does not have a birth certificate either.”

Remarks like these aren’t inherently violent. They can be picked up, however, by individuals who are.

Back in April, CNN’s Rick Sanchez blamed Fox News, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh and conservatives in general for gun violence and murders in America. Now they’re blaming conservatives for the actions of white supremacists. What next? I suppose they’ll blame conservatives for Obama’s failures.

Stuart Taylor at the National Journal sums it up nicely.

So accustomed have we become to identity politics that it barely causes a ripple when a highly touted Supreme Court candidate, who sits on the federal Appeals Court in New York, has seriously suggested that Latina women like her make better judges than white males.

Indeed, unless Sotomayor believes that Latina women also make better judges than Latino men, and also better than African-American men and women, her basic proposition seems to be that white males (with some exceptions, she noted) are inferior to all other groups in the qualities that make for a good jurist.

Any prominent white male would be instantly and properly banished from polite society as a racist and a sexist for making an analogous claim of ethnic and gender superiority or inferiority.

Imagine the reaction if someone had unearthed in 2005 a speech in which then-Judge Samuel Alito had asserted, for example: “I would hope that a white male with the richness of his traditional American values would reach a better conclusion than a Latina woman who hasn’t lived that life” — and had proceeded to speak of “inherent physiological or cultural differences.”

Now just watch. If GOP attacks her in any significant manner, they’ll be labeled as sexist and racist bigots.

But you have to applaud Obama for transparency. He’s even extending transparency to the terrorist by releasing Bush-era memos about CIA interrogation techniques.

A former top official in the administration of President George W. Bush called the publication of the memos “unbelievable.”

“It’s damaging because these are techniques that work, and by Obama’s action today, we are telling the terrorists what they are,” the official said. “We have laid it all out for our enemies. This is totally unnecessary. … Publicizing the techniques does grave damage to our national security by ensuring they can never be used again — even in a ticking-time- bomb scenario where thousands or even millions of American lives are at stake.”

And they’re no longer terrorists and it’s no longer the “war on terror.”. According to the new Director of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, they’re now known as “man-made disaster makers” and the war on terror is an “overseas contingency operation.”

At the same time Napolitano is calling men and women that have proudly served our country in the military “rightwing extremists”. Or, if you’re against abortion or illegal immigration, you must be a rightwing nutcase.

In the report, right-wing extremism was defined as hate-motivated groups and movements, such as hatred of certain religions, racial or ethnic groups. “It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration,” the report said.

How is it they forgot to mention the radical leftwing groups within the animal rights, environmental, and anarchist extremist movements that have actually conducted criminal or terrorist activities. How about the Earth Liberation Front, or ELF, for example?

Anyone remember ELF member Jeff “Free” Luers, who is serving a ten year sentence for the firebombing of SUV’s at a dealership because he thought they were bad for the environment? Luers said he did it to “raise awareness about global warming.”

Or how about these ELF whackos?

On November 11, 2006, Joyanna Zacher, Nathan Block, Daniel McGowan and Jonathan Paul pleaded guilty to several eco-sabotage related charges, as part of a global resolution agreement with prosecutors. Judge Ann Aiken presided over the hearings. The change of pleas from the four defendants resolves all current “Operation Backfire” cases in Oregon.[13]

On December 15, 2006, Chelsea Dawn Gerlach and Stanislas Gregory Meyerhoff, pleaded guilty to $20 million worth of arsons committed between 1996 and 2001 by the Eugene-based cell of the ELF known as “The Family”. Their fire-bombing of a Vail ski resort resulted in damages totaling $12 million, with the FBI characterized the ELF as the United States’ “top domestic terrorism threat”. Gerlach has previously pleaded guilty to 18 counts of arson in other attacks, saying she was motivated by “a deep sense of despair and anger at the deteriorating state of the global environment,” but adding that she has “since realized the firebombings did more harm than good.” Meyerhoff has renounced ELF and pleaded guilty to 54 counts, but is still under indictment in Michigan, Arizona, Washington, Wyoming and California.[14]

On March 6, 2008, Briana Waters, who was arrested in Operation Backfire for another ELF attack in Washington State, was found guilty of two counts of arson[10] and sentenced later that year to six years in prison.[15]

And if you’re a gun owner, you must be a rightwing extremist.

“Proposed imposition of firearms restrictions and weapons bans likely would attract new members into the ranks of rightwing extremist groups, as well as potentially spur some of them to begin planning and training for violence against the government. The high volume of purchases and stockpiling of weapons and ammunition by rightwing extremists in anticipation of restrictions and bans in some parts of the country continue to be a primary concern to law enforcement.”

So forget about the Animal Liberation Front, the Earth Liberation Front or PETA and their terrorist activities against Americans. Forget about Code Pink, whose leader Jodie Evans openly supported the terrorists in Iraq who are killing American soldiers and Iraqis. These are just a few examples. Instead, lets focus on a problem that doesn’t exist, because there are no left-wing terrorist groups.

What a country.

“create two million new jobs by rebuilding our crumbling roads, and bridges, and schools — by laying broadband lines to reach every corner of the country”;

“invest $15 billion a year in renewable sources of energy to create five million new energy jobs over the next decade”;

“give a tax break to 95 percent of Americans who work every day and get taxes taken out of their paycheck every week”;

“reopen old factories, old plants, to build solar panels, and wind turbines”;
build “a new electricity grid”;

“build the fuel efficient cars of tomorrow”;

“eliminate the oil we import from the Middle East in 10 years”;

“lower premiums” for those who already have health insurance;

“if you don’t have health insurance, you’ll be able to get the same kind of health insurance that members of Congress give themselves”;

“end discrimination by insurance companies to the sick and those who need care the most”;

“invest in early childhood education”;

“recruit an army of new teachers”;

“pay our teachers higher salaries, give them more support. But … also demand higher standards and more accountability”;

“make a deal with every young person who’s here and every young person in America: If you are willing to commit yourself to national service, whether it’s serving in our military or in the Peace Corps, working in a veterans home or a homeless shelter, then we will guarantee that you can afford to go to college no ifs ands or buts”;

“stop spending $10 billion a month in Iraq whole the Iraqis have a huge surplus”;

“end this war in Iraq”;

“finish the fight and snuff out al Qaeda and bin Laden”;

“increase our ground troops and our investments in the finest fighting force in the world”;

“invest in 21st century technologies so that our men and women have the best training and equipment when they deploy into combat and the care and benefits they have earned when they come home”;

“No more homeless veterans”; and

“no more fighting for disability payments.”

WASHINGTON—African-American man Barack Obama, 47, was given the least-desirable job in the entire country Tuesday when he was elected president of the United States of America. In his new high-stress, low-reward position, Obama will be charged with such tasks as completely overhauling the nation’s broken-down economy, repairing the crumbling infrastructure, and generally having to please more than 300 million Americans and cater to their every whim on a daily basis. As part of his duties, the black man will have to spend four to eight years cleaning up the messes other people left behind.
