A little more than one year ago, Chuck Colson (the Evangelical founder of Prison Fellowship who, long before that, was an ill-advised advisor to Richard Nixon in the heat of the Watergate debacle) released, alongside Roman Catholic academic heavy hitter Robert George, a manifesto that might be considered the defensive foxholes of the Culture Wars. 

The document, dubbed the Manhattan Declaration, was lauded by many on the Right upon its release.  It has since been signed by tens of thousands.  A link to the document and its cyberhome follows this post.

One of the most direct paragraphs of this forthright 6000-plus word manifesto reads as follows:

Because the sanctity of human life, the dignity of marriage as a union of husband and wife, and the freedom of conscience and religion are foundational principles of justice and the common good, we are compelled by our Christian faith to speak and act in their defense. In this declaration we affirm: 1) the profound, inherent, and equal dignity of every human being as a creature fashioned in the very image of God, possessing inherent rights of equal dignity and life; 2) marriage as a conjugal union of man and woman, ordained by God from the creation, and historically understood by believers and non-believers alike, to be the most basic institution in society and; 3) religious liberty, which is grounded in the character of God, the example of Christ, and the inherent freedom and dignity of human beings created in the divine image.

Secularists may all yawn at this point, noting new here – ”just move along ma’am, nothing new to see hear, c’mon keeping it movin’”

But this Declaration is no mere recitation of a common creed for the politically and religiously minded of the Right.  It is also a declaring of an intent to dig in and really resist the secular world order on the erosion of these three dogmas.

After a brief and cogent overview of 2000 years of the church’s social teachings, a pledge is made to stop the hemorrhaging of Christendom via passive resistance.  This is the line drawn in the sands of relativism in the Manhattan Declaration.  The pledge to hold the line reads like this:

Because we honor justice and the common good, we will not comply with any edict that purports to compel our institutions to participate in abortions, embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide and euthanasia, or any other anti-life act; nor will we bend to any rule purporting to force us to bless immoral sexual partnerships, treat them as marriages or the equivalent, or refrain from proclaiming the truth, as we know it, about morality and immorality and marriage and the family. We will fully and ungrudgingly render to Caesar what is Caesar’s. But under no circumstances will we render to Caesar what is God’s.

The above paragraph can test presupostions.

Some read in it the spirit of Gandalf shouting out his intentions against the Balrog of Moria on the Bridge of Khazad-dum: “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!”

Others instead hear the threats of those whose rich lives were built on the slave plantation system — they hear a cry similar to that which arose from the slave holders decrying the postbellum age of civil rights and mechanized agriculture.

Is the relativistic age that is yet attempting to be born in our midst – an age that presents human life as a commodity, marriage as a merely secular contract and political correctness as the contours of acceptable expression — is this age a boon or a bust for America? 

Relativism is well defined and well revealed by Ken Wilber, in A Theory of Everything:

“[Relativism] claimed that all truth is culturally situated (except its own truth, which is for all cultures); it claimed there are no transcendental truths (except its own pronouncements, which transcend specific contexts); it claimed that all hierarchies or value rankings are oppressive and marginalizing (except its own value ranking, which is superior to the alternatives); it claimed that there are no universal truths (except its own pluralism, which is universally true for all peoples).”

Those signing the Manhattan Declaration see this age of relativism, this present Balrog bearing down upon us, as a total bust for America, and wish to warn their fellow Americans that the complete and total secularization of our ethics will lead us to the graveyard of nations.

Heckling the President is Unacceptable

Last night as President Obama addressed a joint session of Congress on the need for health insurance reform, Republican Congressman Joe Wilson of South Carolina actually screamed out “you lie” on the House floor in front of the full Congress and the entire nation.

Calling the President of the United States a liar in front of the nation is a new low even for House Republicans and it deserves the strongest response we can give. That’s why we’re issuing a special Rapid Response Alert.

I agree, it’s not acceptable. However the liberals easily seem to forget ignore history.

- Obama called former President Bill Clinton a bald-faced liar during the 2008 presidential race.
- Harry M. Reid of Nevada, called President Bush a “loser” in 2005

It looks like Obama hit the “new low” first.

But let’s look at the facts. It appears Wilson was right.

“Under H.R. 3200, a ‘Health Insurance Exchange’ would begin operation in 2013 and would offer private plans alongside a public option…H.R. 3200 does not contain any restrictions on noncitzens—whether legally or illegally present, or in the United States temporarily or permanently—participating in the Exchange.”

It should also be noted that House Democrats killed any attempts in committee to add an enforcement that would require proof of citizenship or legal residency for those getting healthcare subsidies.

1. Purpose
The purpose of this Statement of Objectives (SOO) is to obtain the necessary services to ensure that content published by the Executive Office of the President (EOP) on publicly-accessible web sites is archived in accordance with the Presidential Records Act (PRA), that information posted on publicly-accessible web sites where the EOP maintains a presence is archived in accordance with the PRA, and that all archived information is securely stored and provided to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) for historical preservation, in accordance with the PRA.

Here’s where it gets juicy.

2. Scope
The contractor shall provide the necessary services to capture, store, extract to approved formats, and transfer content published by EOP on publicly-accessible web sites, along with information posted by non-EOP persons on publicly-accessible web sites where the EOP offices under PRA maintains a presence, throughout the term of the contract.

I suppose that means blogs would be searched, indexed and stored as well. But wait, there’s more! They’re already doing it.

4. Background
In order to comply with the Presidential Records Act, the White House New Media team is looking for a non personal service contractor to crawl and archive PRA content on all third party sites where the EOP has a presence (i.e. Facebook.com/whitehouse, Twitter.com/whitehouse). Currently, the Government team is capturing the data and content both programmatically (via Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) from social networks) and manually (through daily screen shots).

If you look back at Obama’s first days as President, he signed Executive Order 13489 [link: PDF] that states that only the records he chooses to be made public will be released. Now he wants to archive everything anyone has to say about him and his administration.

5. Performance Objectives

(G) Capture of comments and publicly-visible tags posted by users on publicly-accessible websites on which an EOP component subject to the PRA maintains a presence. Vendor must be able to either:

(i) Capture all comments posted to a list of websites provided to vendor; or
(ii) Capture a sample of comments posted to a list of websites provided to vendor, according to a sampling

(J) Ability for government employees to tag captures from publicly-accessible websites by arbitrary fields or tags such as office or issue (i.e. OVP or health care).

There is no requirement in the Presidential Records Act for the storage or archiving of non-EOP content. Obama doesn’t care.

The Cincinnati Tea Party has extended invitations to Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana citizens to attend what promises to be the largest Midwest tea party to date: the Voice of America Freedom Rally, September 5, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Voice of America Park Museum in West Chester. The theme of the event will focus on average citizens becoming engaged in the political process and holding their representatives accountable.

Questioning comments he made to a Washington Post reporter in a story published Monday, the Indiana Republican Party called on Rep. Baron Hill to apologize for labeling constituents who disagree with his stance on health care reform as “political terrorists.”

“This is the worst sort of slap in the face an elected official can give to his constituents,” said Indiana Republican Party chairman Murray Clark. “He definitely owes an apology to the people of the 9th congressional district.”

Hill told the Washington Post‘s Peter Slevin, “What I don’t want to do is create an opportunity for the people who are political terrorists to blow up the meeting and not try to answer thoughtful questions.”

“It’s one thing for Baron Hill to not schedule any public forums and to refuse to hear the public’s opinion on an issue,” said Clark. “It’s another level of disrespect entirely when he goes out of his way to call anyone who disagrees with him a ‘terrorist.’”

The Indiana Republican Party sees Hill’s comments as part of an orchestrated effort by national Democrats to quiet growing concerns about their health care reform legislation.

“Baron Hill is just following the marching orders he’s receiving from Washington,” said Clark. “The White House is calling anyone who disagrees with them ‘an angry mob’ and Nancy Pelosi says anyone who disagrees with her is ‘un-American.’ Baron Hill is just falling in line behind national Democrats. It’s sad to see him so easily discount the legitimate concerns of seniors, small business owners and Hoosiers from all walks of life.”

1. Democrats’ Government Takeover Will Cost Middle-Class Families and Small Businesses Billions. Though House Democrats don’t know (or won’t say) how much their government takeover will cost, here’s what we do know: the plan will make health care more expensive and hit the middle class particularly hard with higher taxes, rationed care, and new health care costs. As millions of families and small businesses are struggling to make ends meet while making responsible choices, this plan forces those that make responsible decisions to foot the bill for those who don’t.

2. Democrats’ Government Takeover Will Cost Tens of Millions Their Current Health Care Coverage. The House Democrats’ plan could force more than 100 million Americans out of their current health care plan and onto the government rolls, according to a Lewin Group study published earlier this year. A Congressional Budget Office report on a similar plan authored by Senate Democrats that would force at least 23 million Americans off of their current plans. According to the Associated Press, even the White House admits that the President’s promises about allowing the American people to keep their health care shouldn’t be taken literally.

3. Democrats’ Government Takeover Will Cost Millions of Americans Their Jobs. The House Democrats’ plan would impose employer mandates and cost jobs by requiring some employers – especially some small businesses – to pay a new eight percent tax to Washington. The plan would also slap employers that are unable to offer coverage the government deems adequate with another new financial burden. These two new taxes will make it more difficult than ever for small business owners to reinvest in their businesses and create and retain good paying jobs. Using the economic model of the President’s own economic advisors, an employer mandate would result in 4.7 million Americans losing their jobs.

4. Democrats’ Government Takeover Will Put Bureaucrats in Charge of Key Medical Decisions. Instead of keeping patients and doctors in charge of key medical decisions, the House Democrats’ plan will give Washington the power instead. And if you’re outraged with what Washington’s done with the bailouts, just wait until you see what Uncle Sam does with your health care.

5. Democrats’ Government Takeover Will Cost Future Generations Money They Don’t Have. The House Democrats’ bill simply shifts the burden of debt from one generation to the next. Our nation can’t sustain the Medicaid and Medicare programs now. At a time when families and small businesses already are being crushed under the weight of historic debt, a new government-run program will only further add to the bill passed along to our children and grandchildren.

6. Democrats’ Government Takeover Will Cost Seniors Key Medicare Benefits and Options. In order to expand health care benefits to some seniors, House Democrats will slash coverage millions of other seniors depend on. These benefit cuts will ultimately eliminate choices for seniors.

7. Democrats’ Government Takeover Will Place a New Mandate on Individuals. The House Democrats’ plan mandates that every American buy health insurance or pay a hefty penalty to Washington equal to almost two percent of their income. This would force more Americans into government-run system that will make health care more expensive, ration care, and put bureaucrats in charge of medical decisions.

8. Democrats’ Government Takeover Will Raise Taxes on Families, Small Businesses. Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) readily admitted that the Democrats’ health care “reform” plan would be financed with tax hikes. The Associated Press reported that, “Democrats are considering everything from taxing soda, to raising income taxes on upper income people earning more than $200,000, to a federal sales tax.” Exactly how many new taxes will there be to bankroll this government takeover? When do Democrats plan to reveal them?

9. Democrats’ Government Takeover Is a Missed Opportunity To Reduce Health Care Costs. The House Democrats’ plan does not include even a shred of medical liability reform, missing an opportunity to drive down health care costs by reducing costly, unnecessary defensive medicine practiced by doctors trying to protect themselves from trial lawyers.

10. Democrats’ Government Takeover Harms Small Businesses, Costs Jobs. A draft summary of the House Democrats’ plan uses the amount of an employer’s annual payroll to define “small business,” which is troubling news for millions of Americans who depend on these engines of economic growth. Based on the Democrats’ definition of small businesses only those with, on average, less than 10 employees will be spared from new taxes through employer mandates. This leaves a huge number of small businesses to deal with the onerous and expensive mandates of the House Democrats’ government defined health benefit plan (“small businesses” are traditionally defined as employing less than 500 people). These small businesses employ 47.3 million employees and provide those employees $1.7 trillion in wages annually. The House Democrats’ new employer mandate and taxes on these businesses will make it more difficult to retain these jobs and wages.

There. Go ahead and turn us in.

St. Louis County police say six people were arrested. Two of those were arrested on suspicion of assault, one of resisting arrest and three on suspicion of committing peace disturbances. Carnahan was gone when the ruckus started.

Kenneth Gladney, a 38-year-old conservative activist from St. Louis, said he was attacked by some of those arrested as he handed out yellow flags with “Don’t tread on me” printed on them. He spoke to the Post-Dispatch from the emergency room of the St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, where he said he was waiting to be treated for injuries to his knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face that he suffered in the attack. Gladney, who is black, said one of his attackers, also a black man, used a racial slur against him before the attack started.

“It just seems there’s no freedom of speech without being attacked,” he said.

Within the 300 page amendment added to H.R. 2454 on June 26th is language that will allow the government to audit every aspect of your home and life. The bill states every home owner will receive an energy audit.

H.R. 2454 would also require all homes sales to be conditioned upon an energy audit and a new energy rating assessment and energy labeling program for your home. Homes would be subjected to a new energy rating assessment and energy labeling program that will penalize homeowners for older windows, original fixtures, and dated appliances.

‘Energy wardens’ will police homes and offices to ensure that they do not waste gas and electricity under a radical plan being considered by John Prescott. An extraordinary blueprint being studied by the Deputy Prime Minister suggests conserving energy by monitoring the habits of home owners in the same way that air raid wardens made people turn off their lights during the Blitz.

Householders will also be forced to conduct an “annual energy audit” of their homes, defending the amount of fuel they have consumed. The spectre of a force of “green police” is painted in a study warning that Britain risks catastrophe if it remains dependent on Middle East oil and urging a rapid shift to renewable energy and conservation.

The paper, entitled Britain’s Energy Future, Securing the Home Front, by the former Labour minister Stephen Twigg and the Foreign Policy Centre, compares a future energy crisis to the Second World War aerial bombardment. It says: “The stakes are as high and the solution will be found only when UK citizens and corporate entities (government included) start acting as if the stakes are that high. The mentality at community and householder level must be similar to that of the war years or Britain will have no energy future.”

So be prepared to take a lashing if you’re still using incandescent lightbulbs, have old underperforming windows, and appliances, low R-values in your insulation, leaky faucets, etc. And once you have your home energy assessment, good luck selling the place.
