NEW YORK — Unilever’s Omo detergent is adding an unusual ingredient to its two-pound detergent box in Brazil: a GPS device that allows its promotions agency Bullet to track shoppers and follow them to their front doors.

Starting next week, consumers who buy one of the GPS-implanted detergent boxes will be surprised at home, given a pocket video camera as a prize and invited to bring their families to enjoy a day of Unilever-sponsored outdoor fun. The promotion, called Try Something New With Omo, is in keeping with the brand’s international “Dirt is Good” positioning that encourages parents to let their kids have a good time even if they get dirty.

I can hear the conspiracy theorists already.

Late this year both my Twitter and Facebook accounts had the passwords hacked. Other than a hundred or so SPAM messages sent on Twitter the damage was minimal. Imagine if it had been a bank account?

After that happened I decided to increase the security level of my passwords.

Hackers run password crackers that can spew out millions of combinations in minutes. Consider that a six letter password, using all letters or numbers can be hacked in less than three minutes. That’s 308 million possible letter combinations using all upper case or all lower case letters. Throw in letter/number combinations and it only takes them a few extra minutes.

If your password only contains letters and numbers, or a combination of the two, I would suggest reading on.

One of the challenges I faced was having so many passwords. I really did not want them all to be the same, so I devised this system after researching the subject.

Step one:

The first part of a unique yet memorable password is the prefix identifier. The rule can be this simple. Use the first two or three letters of the name of the web site you’re accessing. For this example, we’ll use three. For Twitter, it would be “twe” and for Facebook, “fac” etc. Think of that as the area code of your password.

Step two:

You want at least two special characters for security, three is better. Special characters are found on your numeric keys. For example; &^%$#@, etc.

For this example we’ll use “$*&”. That will become the second portion of your password, and will remain the same for all sites.

Step three:

Pick a core password. For this example we’ll use “notre”

So, for Twitter it would be – twe$*&notre

For Facebook, it would be – fac$*&notre

You now have a password for each site that’s easy to remember, but it’s still unique. You may have to make a few adjustments here and there, as some sites do not allow special characters in a password. Personally, I just avoid using them. If that’s how serious they take security, I’ll go somewhere else.

Also, I make an exception on email, bank account and credit card sites. I follow a different set of criteria, but the same basic rules.

In addition, if you’re sharing passwords on sites that do not have a way to setup multiple users, use the same rules as above, but use different special characters and a different core password. No sense having your cow-orker figure out your secret and hack into your email.

My guess is a denial of service attack, but who knows. It’s been an issue on and off for several days. I had issues with YouTube earlier today, which is owned by Google. It seems to be working fine now, as is the Google search engine. Gmail is still not responding.

If you’re going to go the federal government’s Cars.Gov web site for the “Cash for Clunkers” program, it seems they have a privacy clause that states:

“This application provides access to the DoT System. When logged on to the CARS System, your computer is considered a Federal computer system and is the property of the U. S. Government.

Any or all uses of this system and all files on this system maybe intercepted, monitored, recorded, copied, audited, inspected and disclosed to authorized CARS, DoT, and law enforcement personnel, as well as other authorized officials of other agencies, both domestic and foreign.”

Don’t be frightened.

Bloggers are in an uproar over this, and without just cause. As a matter of fact a couple of mainstream media outlets have also ran with this story. What they’re missing is this only applies to car dealers, not consumers. It all began with a broadcast by Glenn Beck, which you can see below.

While I enjoy Glenn Beck, it would appear his IT staff are fairly ignorant. Let’s review it again.

When logged on to the <insert gov’t agency name here> System, your computer is considered a Federal computer system and is the property of the U. S. Government.

This is a standard disclaimer that is displayed when you log into *any* federal system, whether it be via the web, direct connection, modem, etc. They’ve used it for years. Many years ago I had to log into one of the General Services Administration’s (GSA) web sites on behalf of a client. I got the same basic warning.

A federal commission concluded a GPS-based mileage tax to offset the revenue decline by newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles was the “best path forward”, and now University of Iowa researchers are tweaking a GPS system that will track your vehicles every move. With the current by-the-gallon fuel tax is not generating enough revenue, many are proposing a pay-by-the-mile tax. The only way to accomplish this would be to equip all vehicles with a device to track your mileage.

I think the concept of a pay-as-you go fuel tax may have merit, but using GPS is not the answer as it will allow a further breach of our civil liberties. With the technological advances in the last decade, far less intrusive technology could be used. How about a device that doesn’t track your vehicle, but records your mileage since your last fill up at the gas station and charges you at the pump?

Proponents of the project claim the GPS devices could also be used to as a tool to help manage traffic and relieve congestion. Bullshit. There are other ways to monitor traffic including below pavement ground sensors, cameras, etc.

As one blogger put it, “I’m also paranoid enough that I’d prefer not being harassed or suspected of a crime because I’m one of 200 other cars listed as “near” a crime scene.” Or another who said:

I’m a pretty good shade tree mechanic, even on newer cars.

You’d better believe that the transponder on my next car is going to get removed and will be emitting a nice, regular signal from the corner of the garage, while it gathers dust. It will keep company with the restrictive catalytic converter, intake manifold, and exhaust system that I removed from my sports car.
