Watson works at Bortolo’s Downtown Pizza & Ice Cream, 534 W. Berry Street in Fort Wayne (map). It is housed in the Westbury Apartment Building. The area is ripe with sex offenders, including several at the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission, as well as a couple that work at Fort Wayne Newspapers. Within a 3 miles radius there are over 15 sex offenders.

2011 Indiana General Assembly is Less than One Week Away!

The Indiana legislature is right around the corner, with an official start up date of January 5th. We are starting to review the first of more than 1,200 bills that are typically filed in each session.

Here are a few bills that have been made public that we have reviewed which might interest you, and give you an idea of the wide variety of issues considered:Senate Bill 5 (& SB 57) – These bills address the problem of synthetic marijuana, which has been found to be far more dangerous than actual “pot.” They define a “synthetic cannabinoid” and makes possessing, dealing in, manufacturing, or delivering it the same criminal penalty as with marijuana or hashish.

Senate Bill 29 – This bill concerns the crime of child solicitation in our sex-saturated society. When I first began as an intern in the Indiana House in 1990 there were very few bills addressing criminal sexual misconduct with children. Today, it is not unusual to have a dozen different bills concerning solicitation, “sexting”, child porn or what used to be statutory rape, now called sexual misconduct with a minor.

Senate Bill 43 – Here is another example of this issue. This bill requires that certain persons convicted of child molesting and violent sex offenders be required to wear a GPS tracking device upon parole.

Senate Bill 50 – This bill would require any woman obtaining an elective abortion to have an ultrasound beforehand.

House Bill 1028 (& HB 1043)– Those who seem to think that protecting marriage and keeping the importance of both a mother and a father in that institution is a distraction or too controversial to address should consider these bills. HB 1028 and 1043 are “right to work” bills, which prohibit as a condition of employment the requirement that an employee join a union or pay union dues. I personally believe this bill could have economic benefits for Indiana, but the last time this was seriously attempted, over five thousand noisy protesters stormed the capitol building. It was the biggest demonstration I’ve ever seen at our capitol in my 20 years of experience there. If controversy is an excuse for avoiding an important issue, marriage protection is far less controversial than many other bills we will see this year.

House Bill 1042 – This bill concerns the issue of cell phone “sexting” and the illegal dissemination and possession of sexual material. The bill addresses this problem in schools among students. The problem has become so severe and pervasive that many believe charging kids with serious felonies is not a realistic option. I do not necessarily agree. (If kids knew the seriousness of this crime, they might be less inclined to take that risk.) Yet, this bill is an effort to give schools better tools to address this problem.

I corresponded with one of his friends, and confirmed this is indeed also Daniel Gordon.

Under IC 35-42-4-12 – Sec. 12 reads the following:

(e) A person described in subsection (b) who knowingly or intentionally uses:
(1) a social networking web site; or
(2) an instant messaging or chat room program;
that the offender knows allows a person who is less than eighteen (18) years of age to access or use the web site or program commits a sex offender Internet offense, a Class A misdemeanor. However, the offense is a Class D felony if the person has a prior unrelated conviction under this section.

We will see how long it takes for this one to disappear.

Original post: Daniel R. Gordon was convicted in 2004 of Child Solicitation. He has a page on Facebook. According to Facebook’s terms of use, he shouldn’t be there.

Report a convicted sex offender.
As stated in our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, convicted sex offenders are prohibited from registering for our service. Once we are able to verify a user’s status as a sex offender, we immediately disable their account. When an account is disabled, the profile and all information associated with it are immediately made inaccessible to other Facebook users. What this means is that the user effectively disappears from the Facebook service and will not be able to reactivate their account.

I recall a bill was being sought to not allow convicted sex offenders on social networks when Steve Carter was in office. I’ve been looking over Indiana code and cannot seem to locate whether he’s in violation. Any lawyer out there know the answer?

His name is Billy J. Smith and he is employed as a janitor by the Andrew Public Library in Andrews, IN, (Huntington county). He was convicted of child molesting in 1995. We’re told the library has stated because of the date of his conviction, he’s allowed to be employed there due to a grandfather clause, in spite of the fact that he occasionally is around during story telling time and special events that involve children.

I could not find that in the Indiana Code.

LOS ANGELES — The actor who played the principal in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” has been charged with failing to update his sex offender registration status.

Actor Jeffrey Jones failed to update his information with California officials after his birthday in September, Los Angeles county district attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said.

Jail records show the 63-year old was arrested by Los Angeles police on June 23 and released after posting $20,000 bail.

Jones has appeared in numerous films including “Beetlejuice” and “Sleepy Hollow,” but is probably best known as the malevolent principal, Edward Rooney, in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”

He pleaded no contest in 2003 in Los Angeles to a felony charge of employing a 14-year-old boy to pose for sexually explicit photos.

It is the second time the actor has been arrested for failing to keep his sex offender status current.

He was arrested in Florida in 2004 for the same offense.

He is due for arraignment on July 14.

Jackson County, IN Protesters Make an Unprecedented Stand

In this day of moral relativism, when making a judgment about someone’s behavior is taboo, this is a story that is hard to believe.

Perhaps the good people of Jackson County, in the small town of Uniontown, simply didn’t know any better. When a porn chain store opened along Interstate 65 in Southeast Indiana four years ago, no one must have told a group of concerned citizens that they would embark upon a journey no other group in the Midwest has traveled.

These patriots cared about preserving their Hoosier values and they were not about to allow smut peddlers to harm marriages and families with the distribution of pornography in this rural community. So they decided to have a protest.

When a strip club, porn store, abortion clinic or a casino opens, there are often protests from local residents. Those citizens may also take the step of writing letters to the editor, complain at a local government hearing or contact a legislator. The media will often cover the controversy with a story or two. Once in while, their concern will be acted upon by a state legislator, a city councilor or other elected official. But then the issue seems to fade away.

If this were the typical controversy, the story of the Uniontown Protestors verses the Lion’s Den would have already come and gone. In fact, nearly four years after it opened, the Lion’s Den is still open. But this is a story of courage and duty like no other. It’s also a story of victory.

As you may have guessed, the Uniontown protestors did protest outside the porn store. In fact, they have protested for nearly four years. That alone is notable these days. To have a group of about fifty people protesting a store every weekend for four years in sun, rain or snow is impressive. But these thirty-to-fifty residents didn’t protest every weekend. They have protested outside the Lion’s Den every hour of every day, 24-hours a day for 1,403 days in a row, as of June 15th!

The Uniontown Watchdogs, as they are known, have a method to their madness. They have been strategic with a purpose. When a truck driver exits the interstate and pulls into the Lion’s Den he sees a sign warning him that his truck’s picture will be taken and his license plate number sent to his truck company management letting them know he visited a porn store. In fact, when anyone parks at the Lion’s Den they are warned by similar signs and photographed. Their license number and car description is recorded, and if there is any illegal behavior in the parking lot, that is also photographed.

What has this “in your face” protesting accomplished? Well, on the surface, nothing. The Lion’s Den operates today, 24-hours a day with customers in the parking lot at all hours. The Uniontown Watchdogs are the scorn of many. Customers routinely shout obscenities, flip off or expose themselves to the protesters. Few of the churches in this rural area support the protesters. Recently, the County Council tried to limit the protester’s ability to demonstrate. But this dim view misses “the rest of the story.”

Looking only at the reaction of the Lion’s Den patrons, the fact that the porn store is still in business or that many of the local leaders may not stand with the Watchdogs misses all that their courage and faithfulness has accomplished.

When the Lion’s Den was built, court records show that up to 200 trucks a day were expected to fill a parking lot that is now covered in weeds. Instead of 1,400 semi-trucks a week, the Lion’s Den attracts fewer than 20. Some protesters believe that up to 90% of potential customers either drive past the Lion’s Den when they see the warning signs, or they turn around in the parking lot and leave at the sight of the protesters’ cameras.

And what of the angry customers shouting profanities or bearing it for all to see? Perhaps a better question is what about the safety of the community? A parole officer from another county ran the plate numbers recorded by the Watchdogs. He found numerous sex offenders violating their parole by visiting the porn store and took action against them.

Obviously, not all of the Lion’s Den customers are sex offenders, or even angry people misbehaving in the parking lot. But many of their customers are better people today. One of the protester’s signs offers a free Bible to any customer who wants one. To date they have given away over 1,000 Bibles. Each of the protestors seems to have a story of praying with a customer who wanted help for an addiction or a relationship problem.

Last month an out-of-state truck driver returned to the store, but not to buy porn. This time, he came to spend the weekend with the protestors who had led him to the Lord. He had crossed the line from customer to protestor wanting to tell other Lion’s Den customers of a real life-changing love. In fact, the Watchdogs estimate that over 100 customers over the last 3 years and 10 months have prayed to accept Christ. Sadly, fewer than five churches in the county support the Watchdogs. This is perhaps because they see only a group of “controversial” protestors outside a business, rather than the outreach to misguided porn users.

The Uniontown Watchdogs still hope to see the Lion’s Den close, either through legal battles wherein the store is in violation of ordinances, or through an economic drain caused by the protest. Some estimates place the loss of revenue for the Lions Den to be half-a-million dollars.

Regardless of the open wound of still having a porn store operating in their community, these faithful courageous few have already succeeded. Through their bold action, they have confronted evil and changed lives. What more could any community ever want from a handful of its citizens? The Uniontown Watchdogs are role models we can all learn from, thank, and admire for their selfless act of good citizenship

Police have issued an Amber Alert for a Grand Rapids girl last seen near her home, and believed to be traveling with a man whose criminal history may contribute to her danger.

Fourteen-year-old Jessica Gerdracht is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 118 pounds, and has brown eyes and blondish-brown hair. Moises Espinoza Hernandez, 31, is described as 5 feet 1 inch and 140 pounds, with hazel eyes and short brown hair. He has tattoos on his right finger, right hand, left forearm and left hand.

He is currently on parole for assaultive crimes and may have organized crime connections, police say. The pair may be traveling in a black 1999 Volkswagen Jetta.

Anyone with information is asked to call Grand Rapids Police at (616) 456-3400, or dial 911 immediately.
