Governor Mitch Daniels issued a statement today about HEA 1210, approved this week by the Indiana General Assembly:

“I will sign HEA 1210 when it reaches my desk a week or so from now. I supported this bill from the outset, and the recent addition of language guarding against the spending of tax dollars to support abortions creates no reason to alter my position. The principle involved commands the support of an overwhelming majority of Hoosiers, as reflected in greater than 2:1 bipartisan votes in both legislative chambers. Read the rest of this entry »

Moving Your Tax Dollars Away from Abortion Groups Inches Forward

Representative Eric Turner
will file a “concurrence motion” agreeing to the Senate’s changes toHouse Bill 1210. This is essentially an agreement with the Schneider Amendment preventing your state tax dollars from going to any organization that performs abortion. Currently, Planned Parenthood, Indiana’s largest abortion provider, receives around $3 million of your taxes from every bi-annual state budget. Read the rest of this entry »

STATEHOUSE (April 18, 2011) – State Sen. Jim Banks (R-Columbia City) today joined fellow lawmakers in supporting an amendment to a key anti-abortion bill that would strip public funding of Planned Parenthood – the state’s largest abortion provider.

Members voted 36-13 in favor of the amendment – prohibiting any state contracts or grants with Planned Parenthood or other organizations that provide abortions – sending House Bill 1210 to its third and final reading in the Senate. Banks credited State Sen. Scott Schneider (R-Indianapolis) for crafting the amendment.

“I wholeheartedly believe that Hoosiers’ hard-earned tax dollars should not be used to support abortion providers,” said Banks, sponsor of the legislation. “I am encouraged by this amendment as it marks a positive step toward our goal of reducing the number of innocent lives taken each year through abortions.”

According to Planned Parenthood of Indiana’s 2010 annual report, the organization conducted 5,580 abortions last year – up more than 2 percent from 2009.

If passed, the bill would cut off about $1.6 million that Planned Parenthood of Indiana receives from the state for medical services. Banks said the organization has 28 locations across the state.

Other provisions of HB 1210 would require a physician to inform a pregnant woman considering an abortion that the fetus might feel pain. It also requires a pregnant woman to view fetal ultrasound imaging, unless they decline in writing.

This bill also contains language requiring physician admitting privileges and prohibits health plans under the federal health care exchange from providing abortion coverage.

Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 241 to 185 to cut off the $350 million per year in federal funding Planned Parenthood receives. This measure was rejected in a 58-42 vote by the U.S. Senate.

Indiana Senate Moves Marriage Measure Forward Amid Disruptions

On Monday the Indiana Senate took up the issue of protecting our marriage statutes with a constitutional amendment. Last November you may recall voting on a constitutional amendment to protect a property tax cap law successfully pushed through the legislature by Governor Daniels. This is the same type of proposal. HJR 6 will protect our marriage laws for future generations of children who deserve the best shot at having both a mom and a dad. Read the rest of this entry »

It is Not Just What They Say . . . It is Also What They May Leave Out

I have a certain respect for members of the media concerning the important job they perform. I am routinely amazed at how newspaper reporters can write a story under very short deadlines with depth and accuracy. I am also well aware of Benjamin Franklin’s warning to never go to war with people who buy ink by the barrel. Read the rest of this entry »

Allen County Right to Life Board of Directors Signs Lease for Office Next to Abortion Facility on Inwood Drive

The Board of Directors of Allen County Right to Life and Three Rivers Educational Trust Fund announced today that a lease has been signed for office space located at 2118 Inwood Drive in the building just a few feet away from the only surgical abortion provider in Fort Wayne. “The lease has been signed and we are in the process of finalizing plans for renovation and for moving into our new office,” said Cathie Humbarger, Executive Director. Humbarger cites an increase in pro-life advocacy activity as well as a growing number of pro-life volunteers as the reason for the move. “Many of our pro-life activities, including the 40 Days for Life Campaign, occur in the Inwood Drive vicinity, and this is the logical location for our operations,” Humbarger explains. Also noted was the expanding role of Allen County Right to Life and Three Rivers Educational Trust Fund in Indiana which requires more space.

The public and media will be invited to tour the facility when renovations are complete. Read the rest of this entry »
