June 9, 2010 stayed in room 208 of Don Hall’s Guesthouse at 1313 West Washington Center Road Fort Wayne IN 46825. I slept in the bed closest to the bathroom and woke up with 2 bright red bed bug bites on right side of my chest. I wrote up the incident for the hotel and left it with front desk clerk on June 10, 2010.

Judge Scheibenberger’s spokesperson told AWB the judge said, “Now we can focus on the real issues of the election, and winning in November.”

Under consideration in Savannah is whether a brand spanking new arena would become a new home for the Savannah Sand Gnats. If it flies, it will require a public-private partnership amounting to tens of millions of taxpayer dollars. Sound familiar? Wait for the end.

On Aug. 13, the Sand Gnats’ parent company, Hardball Capital, paid to fly Acting City Manager Rochelle Small-Toney, Alderwoman Mary Ellen Sprague and more than a dozen area business leaders to Fort Wayne, Ind., to tour Parkview Field, the year-old arena built for the minor-league TinCaps, which Hardball also owns.

A second trip is planned in September for another Savannah group, which would include other city officials.

“Our thought was that it probably made sense to let the folks in Savannah see what we’ve done in Fort Wayne,” said Jason Freier, co-owner of the Sand Gnats. “The venue is not just for baseball. We’ve done more than 250 events, including concerts, six weddings and business and community functions. It’s not what you’d think of as a baseball stadium.”

Funny, there was no mention of the big-ass gaping hole in left field. It gets better.

Even with renovations, Grayson Stadium, the Sand Gnats’ current home, has its limitations, Freier said. The city, which owns the stadium, has put $5 million worth of improvements into the ballpark through the same 2006 sales-tax fund.

Still, Freier said, “We need to look at how much we continue to spend on an aging venue.”

And then there’s the question of the Savannah River Landing property.

It was supposed to launch a high-end retail, hotel and condominium complex that would generate more than $57.5 million in tax dollars. With development in limbo, tax dollars aren’t coming in as expected, and the city, meanwhile, is obligated to pay back $20 million in bonds to finance infrastructure improvements. This year, the debt obligation is $546,450. But by 2012, the cost will hover at more than $1.3 million until 2032.

In addition to boosting average game attendance, Fort Wayne’s new stadium helped launch surrounding development, including a new hotel scheduled to open Sept. 1 and a residential/retail component, Freier said.

Aqua Indiana, the private utility providing sewer and water services to Aboite Township residents, recently filed a rate increase request with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC). I oppose this request and wish to explain my reasons.

Approximately eighteen months ago, the IURC granted an unprecedented 75% sewer and water rate increase to Aqua Indiana. This was a reduction from Aqua’s original request for a 100% increase, but it was still far in excess of any rate increase ever experienced by Aqua’s customers and may well have been one of the largest percentage rate increases ever granted to an Indiana utility.

In fairness, Aqua purchased a poorly run utility with significantly greater problems than it realized and the company had invested heavily to fix many glitches that had long troubled and frustrated its Aboite customers. However, the generous rate increases granted by the IURC should have made Aqua whole and then some.

Aqua now seeks an additional 16.64% increase for water service, together with an 18.48% increase for sewer. Customers are outraged and understandably so.

Aqua attempts to justify this latest demand by claiming it has recently modernized its water treatment facility. I, too, am a customer of the utility and I can attest from personal experience that the results of this alleged modernization are minimal at best. Aqua is also asking its customers to foot the bill for a multi-million dollar payout it made in settling a long-standing lawsuit with an Aboite neighborhood.

In my opinion, Aqua’s customers should not have to pay for the utility’s legal errors nor should the minimal improvements made to their water quality be treated as anything other than a routine expenditure that can and should be paid back over time with the returns enjoyed from the prior rate increase.

Lastly, this rate request comes at a terrible moment in time for Aqua customers. The tough economy is making it difficult for many families to keep their financial ships afloat. To be asked to pay even more money for sewer and water services, especially so soon after the massive recent increases, is inexcusable.
I encourage all customers of Aqua Indiana to join me in opposing this utility’s excessive and inappropriate demand to increase its rates once again. You can do so by writing to the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC) before Aug. 24, and letting them know how you feel. Their address is OUCC, 115 W. Dr. Laura Schlessinger has announced that she will stop doing her national radio show once her contract is up, due to the fallout from her discussion with a black woman caller about the so-called “N-word,” otherwise known as “nigger.”

Nigger is just a word. People should not be afraid of words. Only cowards are afraid of words.

Only cowards are afraid of nigger.

Just say the word about a dozen times. Rest assured, it will lose its alleged “power.” It has no power. It is simply a collection of letters.

A person can use the exact same letters to spell the word “ginger.” Where there is ginger there is nigger. According to some, that means the word “ginger” will need to be outlawed. While we are at it, we may as well make the word “nickers” a crime because it sounds too much like “nigger.” Well, maybe black people will be allowed to say “nickers.”

Of course, anyone can say “the N-word” because that only makes listeners see and hear the word in their minds. No one has to soil his mouth with the vile bile of a word.

Or course, in a matter of time “the N-word” will be made illegal because is supposedly means “nigger” … unless you are talking about Nabisco or Navistar.

Are you getting this, people?

As a black man, I agree with Dr. Laura on the split-minded matter of the word “nigger” being reserved for use by a particular race. Allowing one race to engage in behavior while vilifying another race for doing the exact same thing IS racism.

Dr. Laura says that black comics on HBO use the word nigger all the time — and she is absolutely correct. Just listen to a Chris Rock or Katt Williams show. Rappers like Snoop Dogg, Ice-T, Eve and Dr. Dre use the word “nigger” all the time in their COMMERCIAL ART, largely marketed to children, teens and young adults.

This situation is completely ridiculous. Why is it okay for black people to say nigger — black entertainers use the word in public forums all the time — but when a white person like Dr. Laura says it, Hawaii state lawmaker John Mizuno decides to introduce legislation that makes saying the word nigger a crime. Combine that with the 2009 federal Hate Crime Prevention Act — named after murder victims Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. — and Snoop Dogg’s next “Still Smoking” live concert in Honolulu may be a federal crime.

Dr. Laura was being naive when she expressed her notion that racism in the U.S. would disappear with the election of Barack Obama, America’s black AND white president. That concept is hopefully (or hopelessly) silly. That does not make Dr. Laura a racist. A rational conversation about words does not make Dr. Laura a racist.
