Obama’s gonna pay my mortgage, and buy me gas! And now, we’re going to take your property and give it to someone else.

First, a couple of reminders.

From SF Gate:

(04-04) 19:06 PDT SAN FRANCISCO — A group of homeless people and housing activists took over a privately owned Mission District duplex on Sunday in what served as the climax of a protest designed to promote use of San Francisco’s vacant buildings as shelters for the needy.

But the owner of the property – who was targeted over his eviction of a tenant – said the demonstration was nothing more than breaking and entering.

So now it’s come to this? I have a very good friend who came here from then Communist Romania. He managed to escape while it was ruled under the iron hand of Nicolae Ceausescu. During his reign over 250,000 Romanian homes were seized by the government. Are we heading in that direction?

In this case, what did the police do? Nothing.

…more than fifty people marched in the rain through the Mission District, hoisting picket signs that read “House keys not handcuffs” and chanting “Whose city? Our city.” The action was organized by Homes Not Jails, a 20-year-old group affiliated with the San Francisco Tenants Union.

By the time the tail of the procession reached the duplex on the 500 block of San Jose Street, at least eight people were inside, holding banners from second-story windows. It wasn’t clear how they gained entry, and Ted Gullicksen, leader of the tenant organization, declined to provide details.

More than a dozen police officers were on hand, most standing on the sidewalk on the other side of the street. Asked earlier whether they would take action if protesters occupied the property, officers declined to comment. One said, “We’ll see.”

By 3 p.m., all had left but one, who stayed to ensure that “nobody is out of hand,” said a police official, Sgt. William Escobar. No arrests had been made.

[...]

About 5 p.m. Sunday, he said, police knocked on the door of the building and asked protesters how long they planned to stay. According to Gullicksen, they responded that they had no immediate plans to leave.

hammery2They have a tenants union? I checked them out. Here’s their logo. Remind you of anything?

Renters Economic Relief Ballot Measure Will Stop New Rent Increases For Tenants Who Are Unemployed or Have Had Wages Cut

Last year Mayor Newsom vetoed Sup. Chris Daly’s Renters Economic Relief Package and the Supervisors were unable to override the veto. On June 8, the main piece of that package will be on the ballot as Proposition F. The measure will let tenants get any rent increases postponed of they are unemployed, have had wages cut by 20% or more or if they did not get a cost of living increase in their government benefits. Tenants must also be paying at least 33% of their income to rent to qualify to get rent increases stopped.

This is telling, “or if they did not get a cost of living increase in their government benefits.

And now they want to take the personal property of someone and give it to the shiftless.

  1. The biggest question of the day is why weren't the people inside the buildings – illegally – cited for Trespassing, Breaking and Entering, Conspiracy to Commit (2 counts, for each of the two preceding crimes), etc., etc.?

  2. AWB says:

    It's San Francisco.

  3. Nah, that's a cop-out. I know plenty of folks in SFO who've been busted for trespassing before. :-)

  4. buscopat says:

The building owner should be able to charge the police for damages, as they watched a crime in progress, and stood by and did nothing.
Hopefully stupid things like that, if they are going to happen, stay on the west coast.

  5. buscopat: better still. By doing nothing they probably meet the local-law definition of "aiding and abetting", and could have criminal charges filed against THEM.

But that all requires finding an ADA with balls. And we know that THEY'RE not allowed in office… :-P

  6. Whether it's fair or not, police are not legally liable when they fail to protect you.

I would guess that the owners and police waited for the crowd to dissipate before pursuing the eviction.

It is funny how the left is accusing the tea party of violence, and then this type of crap happens.

You don't have to worry about "leftards" taking your property in Indiana. How many squatters do you know willing to pay property tax for 10 years on property they don't own? BTW It is not stealing if the law actually has a method for changing the owner of the property. http://www.in.gov/legislative/ic/code/title32/ar2…
