I follow the Tea Party movement in Indiana and nationally. There’s rumblings of creating a third party to field “Tea Party” candidates. Wrong move.
If the Tea Partier’s field any candidates, it’s going to be akin to the libertarian party doing the same thing, with the same disastrous results. They’ll simply take away votes from conservatives.
If the Tea Party movement truly wants to make inroads, they’ll focus on rebuilding the republican party, instead of tearing it apart.
Case in point:
Tea Party could help Reid get re-elected
The Tea Party movement could end up helping one of its biggest enemies get re-elected, according to a new poll.
Majority Leader Harry Reid has consistently trailed both of his Republican opponents in head-to-head matchups, but a separate Tea Party candidate could split the conservative vote and help Reid squeak by to re-election, according to the Las Vegas Journal-Review survey.
In a hypothetical three-way race, Reid would garner 36% of the vote, compared to 32% for a GOP nominee and 18% for a Tea Party candidate
With no Tea Party candidate in the race, Reid lags behind his possible GOP opponents Sue Lowden and Danny Tarkanian by 13% and 11%, respectively.
The Tea Party has filed paperwork to field a candidate in the race. Though no one has declared, many expect businessman John Ashjian to throw his hat in the ring.
The results highlight a big riff in the Tea Party movement: whether to support the Republican party or field third-party candidates.
This is only one example. If the Tea Party movement wants to succeed, they’ll get behind the republican party.
