dungeons and dorksI suggested to a friend that to get an inside view of how some of the Tea Party types think, he should go to this group http://www.meetup.com/Indiana-DOL/ and subscribe to some of their emails.

His response:

TeaParty…no thanks
Retreaded UFO & Dungeons Dragon types

Art Bell retired somewhere (probably an abandoned Minuteman Silo) years ago…

After being on their email list for a week and seeing some of the buffoonery exchanged among them, I must say, he’s not entirely wrong with his assessment.

What sort of buffoonery would that be?

  2. TeaPartierbutnotanut says:

Wow…that does it…meet me at Sams Club and I will get a temp membership (so they can't track my purchases) and we can stock up our "bunker reserves" and then the Neo World Order types will rise up….

Then let's rent Red Dawn on Betamax and invite over the boyz.

Actually, I am involved with a tea party group. You are correct, there are some nuts in the cheerios. Not all of them, but there's no shortage.

I noticed you said "he’s not entirely wrong with his assessment," and I would agree. Most of the Tea Party folk I have met are very nice, determined and ready for a change. It is unfortunate that they have so many radical far right wing conspiracy nut cases in their groups. There are far too many birthers and truthers within the Tea Party movement. They need to somehow shed themselves of these people, as they're giving the movement a black eye.

The tea party far right mindset is to the GOP that the ACLUSs far left mindset is to the Democrats.

    Tish,

One definition of Buffoonery is foolish behavior. While I can give quite a few examples, the most recent is the Tea Partier's wasting time and effort to boycott Uno's Pizzeria because they're no longer welcome there. Not only do I deem this foolish behavior, that effort would be better placed working on getting candidates elected.

Instead, the Tea Party is going to take money out of the hands and mouths of servers, cooks and bartenders by chasing off Uno's patrons. These are people that generally live paycheck-to-paycheck and the Tea Party in the end is only going to hurt them. Stupid.

This is something I'd expect from the SEIU or ACORN. It's not something I'd expect from true conservatives.

republicans have the same kind of nut jobs mcains kid for example and hoovers grand daughter. dont label all the tea party people with that broad brush 90% of the people at last years tea party were interesting to talk to and very ordinary. however there were a few rerally out there people both in the crowd and speaking. seiu and acorn seem to be doing very well so i dont see your point. i seem to remember you didnt think conservatives should be protesting last year that seems to have worked out for the better.

  7. Nutjobs will join any new movement. Pick any side of any issue, and try forming a group promoting that cause while keeping crazy people. Even the military has trouble keeping lunatics from joining, but that is no reason to disparage the rest of that group.

  8. Tish says:

Thanks for your reply, AWB. While I would agree that there are a few people one could consider extreme in the Indiana Tea Party, I find that they're a tiny minority. Most folks are average citizens, like me, who are just fed up with the shenanigans in all levels of government. The ideologies and personalities of the group are diverse, but most of us just want government to stop growing, stop spending like drunken sailors and quit pretending the Constitution no longer applies.

(submitting rest of comment in seperate post as it's too long!)

  9. Tish says:

As for Uno's, I haven't come across any kind of formal Tea Party request for a boycott. It is entirely possible I missed that email, though. Was there one? In any event, it's my opinion that those who wish to boycott Uno's have every right to do so. Uno's management made the decision to take money out of the servers' and cooks' hands when they decided, based on one customer complaint, to uninvite a group which had been faithfully meeting, and spending money, at their establishment for months. Talk about buffoonery! I think the angry responses of Tea Party members are understandable, nothing at all like SEIU or ACORN.

Again, thanks for your response. I love your blog and try to visit it daily.

  10. There's a lot of different tea party types out there. In NW Indiana we had some Obama supporters who were surprised at how bad a President he was becoming and joined together against his type of government. This wasn't far enough right for the Ron Paul supporters who attempted to take over the movement, so they worked to take over the group. It also wasn't socially conservative enough for Richard Behney in Indy and the Wabash tea partiers, so they tried to act like NW Indiana's group didn't exist and even invited their members to competing events.

The same thing by the way has happened at the national level, sniping and stealing sheep. Reminds me a lot of the amateur politics usually associated with churches, wherein a rather normal person gets their first taste of leadership and it goes to their head quickly.

Tea party and Ron Paul groups, liberty groups and pro-life and pro-gunners even all have a place in the Republican Party. Those who have gotten involved, taken precinct chairs, gone to state convention, written on blogs and truly engaged, are going to be dynamite parts of the movement. Those who write in echo chambers and email each other conspiracies will rant against the state and big brother and never quite learn that their own inability to be learners is holding them back from making a diffrerence.

Because of the last minute change in plans, might I suggest that a member of your group volunteer to stand ON THE PUBLIC SIDEWALK near the entrance of UNO's holding a sign stating "Uno's new policy "patriots are not welcome here."

  12. Tom says:

I know several "tea party" participants and even leaders. Decent people. Honest business people, and care about where our country is headed, especially fiscally. The fringe element I am sure is real and the one getting all the press. The fringe is found in every political aspect of our country and everywhere else, for that matter – even in religion – we accept that as people's right to free speech, to religion, etc. Why do you wish to paint the tea party participants as "all of one strive" – you are as guilty as the fringe you so dislike. 13. Tish says:

Thanks, AWB. I received that post, as well. It clearly is not a formal call for a boycott. It was a suggestion by a member who is angry at Uno's for its unexpected policy change, who also wanted to warn potential particpants of the meething's new location. Hence, the rest of Cathy's post, "Meeting in [sic] now at HOOTERS, A family and patriot friendly place."

Personally, I wouldn't define her suggestion, which is most likely tongue in cheek, as "buffoonery." But that's just me. :)
