mitch-harper-cm-ride2It seems they like to rant on bicyclists over at the NS.

Why do the taxpayers of Fort Wayne and Allen County have to pay for a bike trail for those very few cyclists who use them? Require bicyclists to buy a plate once a year and so contribute to the cost of the trails.

What do you think? Should bicyclists be paying their way, or is this a right or entitlement?

In California, it’s quite the opposite.

The $700 billion bailout bill intended to stop the tailspin of the nation’s financial sector did something else: It includes federal tax benefits for people who commute by bike.

Starting in January, workers who use two-wheelers as their primary transportation mode to get to and from work will be eligible for a $20-a-month, tax-free reimbursement from their employers for bicycle-related expenses. In return, employers will be able to deduct the expense from their federal taxes.

They’re required in Lafayette and Bloomington, and many other Midwestern cities. There will certainly be ongoing cost associated with maintaining the trails, so why not here?

A perfect idea… not so much plates as licenses… a required yet nominal fee will help in not only the maintenance associated with maintaining trails and such, but also with theft etc…

I had to have a license on my bicycle when I was a kid… no one ever checked to make sure I did, but it was the law in a previously unmentoioned southern Indiana town… these the days before bike trails were ‘in’ and we rode on the street.

    I dunno, ask Jim Sack.

Maybe all the fat women could be forced to get a bike and a plate and use the trail. Then Jim would have somewhere to go to look for his new wife as they slim down and become the women he dreams of.

Is that one of our elected officials on the bike in the pic?

The News Sentinel always selects the most idiotic, puerile, quixotic, ridiculous, and poorly written rants purely for entertainment value. You can almost hear them snickering. They also usually include a bible-quoting, conspiracy “letter to the editor” every now and then to “spice” things up.

Also, please do not give the Henry administration any revenue-stream ideas.

I love the trails. Most of them are paid for by grants. It is my opinion that the more access to trails, the more people will use them, and it may help shift this growing epedimic of overweight children and adults. Also, it keeps some bikers off the road, which is good considering the way some people drive in this town.
