I have. This morning I got a monkey in my inbox.

Phil Troyer is running for congress. Troyer, or someone in his organization signed up my “personal” email address to receive his electronic newsletter. It’s an email address that is not associated with this site, and one I rarely use. Hmmm.. come to think of it, the last time I used this particular address was to receive email from a certain mayoral campaign.

It starts out with “Dear Supporter.” That’s a bit presumptuous. At the bottom it has this statement:

You are receiving this email because you are a friend, have indicated support for my campaign, or were referred by a friend or supporter.

Bullshit. The CAN-SPAM Act prohibits you from harvesting e-mail addresses of potential recipients from web pages and “other sources,” that would include friends, supporters, or.. former mayoral campaign’s email list.

It also has this message:

If the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette and WOWO continue to filter the news of our campaign, then we will need to establish our own alternative news source. In the coming days, I will begin sending brief statements on current events. I would appreciate it if you would forward them on to those people you have on your own email lists. It is a cheap and easy way to help get our message to potential voters.

I receive a lot of press releases, but in every case I’ve asked to be added to their list and it comes to a different email. Since he’s using MailChimp, it does give you an opportunity to “unsubscribe.”

Sorry Phil, I didn’t ask. I’m not cheap, and I’m not easy.
