UPDATE: 3
Deangelo Bennett has been released due to a lack of evidence. Police still suspect he had something to do with the incident.
Washington’s whereabouts are still unknown. He certainly must know the police want to talk to him. Why’s he hiding?
The question I have is this. How did they get their names? Someone obviously knows something.
UPDATE: 2
The Fort Wayne Police department arrested one piece of human debris. Bennett was captured on Wednesday and is being held at Allen County Lockup without bond. One more P.O.S. to go.
UPDATE: 1
As we reported earlier, Ian Jacob Crace was shot to death while delivering a pizza Sunday night on the city’s southeast side of town. From the reports we’ve read, all the dirtbags got was a pizza.
There are now two persons of interest in the case, 18 year-old Deangelo Bennett, and 20-year-old Andre Washington.

If you know either of these two individuals, or know where they’re possibly hiding, call CrimeStoppers at (260) 436-7867 or 1-800-237-STOP. Oh, and notice they both have mug shots.
One more thing. Indiana’s News Center, can I axe you a question? Where’s the damn editor?
Here’s a snippet from their article.

Original post is below.
Ian Jacob Crace was shot to death while delivering a pizza for “Pizza by Vito’s,” Sunday night. It was of course, in the city’s near southeast side, just south of New Haven Avenue and east of Wayne Trace.
Ian was said to be an amazing guy, a “good guy.” Everyone liked Ian. Someone robbed and killed him Sunday night.
For what? Maybe a few bucks?
I used to deliver pizzas, and even though it was over 3 decades ago I didn’t carry much cash. Neither did Ian. I also didn’t deliver in the “little Detroit” section of Fort Wayne.
Ian worked there for two years. He had to be a brave man to trudge through that part of town with a smile on his face as he brought you your dinner. Can you imagine walking through such a depressed and dying neighborhood to deliver pizza pies?
Not me.
When are we going to cleanup the southeast side? Rusty, Tom, are you listening? I see Rusty and his wife walking their bulldog down my peaceful street nearly everyday with not a care in the world. In the meantime, 80% or more of the violent crimes in this city take place in a small place many would call a hell hole.
Instead, let’s spend $17 million on a palatial palace for the mayor and his staff, and over $1 million on turning a perfectly good street into something else. Or, $26 million building a safety academy we now have to drop $550,000 into this year alone just to keep it alive.
Priorities.
Are there any?

I think whatever ‘priorities’ there were for the SE side were killed with Renaissance Pointe[y]… Anyone who thought you could build new homes to look like old homes (except the fact that they look like crappy new homes) and sell them for $100k+ on the SE side was dreaming. I’m not sure I would use the same ‘little detroit hell hole’ language, but there are problems here being ignored.
Dan:
It might not be a hell hole (per se), I would say it IS comparable to Dante’s TENTH LEVEL OF HADES…!
I hate hearing stories like this (and the Tasty Pizza shooting over a year ago), but with the human trash you have in abundance LIVING here, this thing will continue to occur.
I posted about this today, and the really sad part is that I see a microcosm of what is going on overseas during our “war on terror” (or as they call it today…the Overseas Contingency Operation) right here on the south side.
We have spec ops units in country that re NOT being allowed to do the job they’re TRAINED for…
Every politico (here or there) will believe the terrorist/criminal instead of the operator/officer in the field/streets, and as a result, ops are halted mid-stream…that doesn’t go far to WIN any war.
Flash forward to the SOUTH side of the Fort…
Ditto for the FWPD, thanks to the top dog’s “tactics”.
Our police are too busy “chasing the radio”, and being understaffed not only in special units, BUT on the streets during normal shifts.
Personnel are worried about being called on the carpet for not validating some time on the street (everyone slips up once in a while), when they’re not being sued for shooting a perp that was trying to run over other officers (and the city DOES pay up).
The department is being fragged from the top…morale is in the crapper, and the “powers that be” cannot allow the officers to just DO THE JOB we are PAYING them for…like POLICING.
Good police work including constant patrolling (in depth) in neighborhoods DOES halt crime, but coming on scene AFTER the fact isn’t saying much for PROTECTING the public.
Add to that, a mindset by certain ethnicities bent on disrespect and utter contempt for the police and treating THEM like the “bad guy” (until they need them, that is)…it’s no wonder we’re NOT seeing ANY REAL progress in this part of town.
Whatever happened to the time when an officer WALKED a beat…and people RESPECTED the badge?
Now, officers are executed in coffee shops…for no reason, by the result of a flawed judicial system.
And that’s damn sad, because if this craphole down here was PROPERLY cleaned up and the criminals chased back under wherever rock they crawled from, it would greatly benefit the city.
But if you’re just going to put up with robberies that will eventually CLOSE businesses (and drive what few good citizens you have here away), then the city best not come calling for MORE MONEY, when they are certainly a part of this problem…and not part of any solution.
You will be staring at a mini-Detroit.
Nothing worse than a compass than only points in ONE direction, right?
But hey, I just KNOW this because I “live the adventure”…daily.
Good post, Dan!
That must be damn good pizza. worth killing a man in cold blood to have and all. Or could there have been some ulterior motivation?
Nah, can’t be a hate crime. Wrong direction.
hi guys i know Ian he was a good hearted goof ball…. he was a friend of a friend ..we hung out a few times and got a couple of beers….and what not…and i know chad from tasty pizza i use to work there with him.. this blows that low life trash has to kill people over 25-30 bucks or even a fucking pizza………the police needs to step up and do something and clean up that trash part of town..
Paul, I share your outrage. Let’s put the blame where it needs to be placed. The City Administration and the leadership of the police department. Those 2 entities have, in many cases, ham-strung the everyday officers and have limited them in how they do their jobs. The department has moved from being proactive to reactive because the administration and leadership don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings in certain areas of town and do not want to actively patrol to keep our streets safe. They would rather wait until someone is killed, then show up when called to take statements, snap photographs and string that ubiquitous yellow tape all over the place…..oh, and mug for the TV cameras with faces that show compassion and caring…..
But look on the bright side, the City moving into the old W/D building (AKA Ren Sqr) is progressing swimmingly and is something we can all be proud of. (heavy sarcasm). Imagine if that 14, or 18, or 26 million dollars was put back on the street…..
Doug:
I agree 100% there.
Like I said, it’s difficult to do REAL policing when all the officers are chasing the radio (going from call to call to call…all the time).
LONG gone are the days when officers WALKED our neighborhoods, KNEW everyone living there, and headed off a LOT of problems BEFORE they grew into real crimes.
And you’d think w/ all the technologies available today, THAT alone would be a helluva lot EASIER to accomplish.
The whole C.O.P. program (Community-Oriented Policing) needs to be retooled closer to the P.O.P. program (PROBLEM-Oriented Policing).
We’ve got as many (if not more) PROBLEMS in this city as communities.
And the problems with most communities…are the PEOPLE living there.
Love to see the city “fess up” to THAT one.
(we’ve got a better chance of sitting beside GOD at center ice during the next Komets game)
Keep your sarcasm coming…I love it!
well guys i lost a long life friend josh salyer. i met him back in 1981 and went to grade school and middle school and even high school together……one on my best buddys
he was murdered about 5 years ago they found his body in new heaven at the auni source the recyle plant they found in there buried under the cord bord boxes had a bolet head shot…and the copes still cant find the people that killed him….man that was my friend or a brother to me i miss him alot…and one of my friends Jeff Konkle he was my old roommates he got murder shot gun blast to the chest and died…also a good friend… they found the guy that murder him and lock him up for a few years.i think to my self whos next….and that would be a good idia have the police walk the streets and clean up this town…i wish i could do this and help out some..but what can i say…im a angry guy that loves this town been here almost 35 years of life… RIP IAN … IM PAUL MEEKS
I hope whoever killed Ian over a pizza rots in hell. What a senseless loss of life. If it was Bennett and Washington, they should be hung in the street. Maybe if they had gotten off their sorry a**es and gotten jobs, they could have afforded to buy their own pizzas. This story just makes me ill.
The key to the crime is FWCS. Time after time, while I was a sub, these young men were getting into trouble – detention, in school-suspension, out-of-school suspensions and expulsions. I f one was to look back at the history of these individuals, while in school, the majority of these individuals have lengthy discipline records. And, unfortunately FWCS, nor Imagine Schools or Timothy Johnson Academy, can do justice. I do believe that some of the schools within EACS are trying to do their best, working with social service agencies to provide mentoring and counseling for their students.
I believe the real key to solving the southeast side of town crime is to engage the number of young people to be entrepreneurs. The majority of these young people know how to take risks, and are not afraid of getting their hands dirty. However, this has to be a grass-root effort, not just another government funded program.
RIP dear friend. I miss you and I'm sorry I never got the chance to set things right. Happy memorial of 1 year. You are not forgotten….
