Amtrak received quite a large chunk in stimulus funds, $1.3 billion to be exact. You think they’d go for bullet trains or something, no? The first $700K has been spent to refurbish a 27-year-old Amtrak car.
Passenger car no. 25103, damaged a few years ago in a yard collision but now completely refurbished – complete with that “new car” interior smell – was shown off Monday at Amtrak’s maintenance facility in Bear. More than 100 hard-hatted workers joined Amtrak president and CEO Joseph Boardman in celebrating completion of its restoration.
The car, refitted at a cost of about $687,000, will rejoin the Amtrak fleet next week and will be used on long-distance routes stretching from Toronto to Miami.
That’s progress.

Only in america.
So we spent 700k our money to repair a train car to take canadians to miami. Why is our tax payer supported trains up there anyway.
Funny how nobody mentions the FACT that around 20 years ago (when Amtrak was a newbie takeover juggernaut of the smaller railroads), the BUDD company that USED to make all passenger rail cars closed…laying off HUNDREDS (just in Philly). Lord knows how many more were sacked across the country.
AMTRAK has NEVER had a stellar economic profile, and it is nice to know that after ALL this time…some things NEVER change.
