From Politico:

On top of Sen. Evan Bayh’s desk is a Congressional Research Service chart that color-codes states with the most carbon emissions per capita in varying shades of red.

His home state of Indiana is fire-engine red.

That helps explain why Bayh is becoming — for lobbyists, greens and even some anxious House Democrats — the man to watch as the Senate turns to the issue of climate change.

Bayh is among a handful of Democrats who hail from industrial and coal states who are airing big concerns about the idea of creating a cap-and-trade system to reduce carbon emissions.

[...]

“Cap and trade could be a nail in the coffin,” said Indiana Republican political strategist Chris Faulkner, vice president of Faulkner Strategies. You’ll have a lot of angry mine workers.”

EvanBayhSenatorIndianaBayh has plenty to be concerned about. The Beacon Hill Institute at Suffolk University published a paper in June, 2009 highlighting the dangers of the Waxman Markey Cap and Trade legislation on the state of Indiana.

The report concluded that the carbon taxes imposed by Waxman Markey would cost the residents of Indiana $10.02 billion dollars in 2020 and $34.65 billion by 2050 through increased energy prices. That’s BILLIONS. It further concludes that the Indiana economy would shed 54,123 jobs by 2020 and 457,331 by 2050. Full report [here PDF file].

Total employment in the State of Indiana was approximately 2.8 million in the 1st quarter of 2008, [source: Indiana Workforce Development [link PDF file].

Do the math.

It’s time to let Senator Bayh know how we feel about Cap & Trade and the effect it will have on Indiana’s economy and employment. You can also let him know how it would effect his chances for re-election in 2010.
