I nailed 13 last week, and I still have a ton of them tearing up my flower beds, so I re-loaded the bucket today.

From last week’s post:

RE: Getting Rid of Chipmunks

There are a number of posts describing the use of a pail of water with sunflower seeds on top. I can attest that this method really does work. Chipmunks can not resist sunflower seeds. They cannot tell there is water underneath the mat of sunflower seeds. The biggest problem I have had is the raiding of the sunflower seeds by squirrels. When the 5 gal pail is about half full, or a bit more, spread enough sunflower seeds on top to cover the surface of the water. I locate the pail next to a step with the top of the pail at the same level of the step. You will likely have to dig a small hole for the pail to be at the level of the step. When chipmunks come by they jump right in generally without hesitation. I put the dead chipmunks in the woods where they disappear within 24 hours. I use a bent coat hanger to find the dead chipmunks at the bottom of the pail. Again, believe me it really does work and you will be able eliminate a whole neighborhood of chipmunks over a summer. And the squirrel was wondering where his buddy went?

Well obviously I need to try this method, as we well know I have a major chipmunk problem around here and it isn’t just Alvin, Simon and Theodore – they have moved in the whole fam damily!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Diane says:

Where do you dump the drowned chipmonks? Do I just keep adding seeds to the bucket or does it need to be cleaned out daily?

  3. admin says:

I just dump the bucket, seeds and all under a tree. The chipmunk carcasses are gone the next morning.

About 20 and still counting! Only problem is that I dropped a couple in the yard and it took 3 days for them to disappear! Guess the vultures aren’t as hungry in upstate NY. The POD is awesome!

The only problem I have with this method is that the sunflower seeds don’t float! I got raw seeds. Don’t tell me they prefer roasted and salted????

  8. admin says:

The ones I use are from the bird seed section of the grocery store and are called “Black Oil Sunflower Seeds”. They float just fine.

    Wow, that is awesome Dan.

I’m going to go buy a small swimming pool now. Do you happen to know if crack floats?
