Somehow, this doesn’t surprise me.
South Bend’s city bus system, TRANSPO, has bowed down and agreed to permit ads on buses by the Indiana Atheist Bus Campaign that say, “You can be good without God.”
From their website.
Our ads were supposed to go up last Monday, in time for President Barack Obama’s speech at Notre Dame, but the ads were delayed when TRANSPO decided to review the matter. The Indiana Atheist Bus Campaign had a contract with Burkhart stating the ads would be placed last Monday, May 11, or within a 5 day leeway period. As of today, because the ads are not yet up, that contract has been violated by Burkhart.
Hey, freedom of speech and all that. Hopefully some Christian groups will counter with other ads. Bloomington’s city bus service killed their attempts at similar ads and of course, they filed a lawsuit.
Me, I’m better with God.

Its all a “house of cards” without God. I guess we have to learn experientially on this one. Goodness for goodness sake is a meaningless platitude. You might as well be “evil for goodness sake” because it doesn’t really matter, its all relative and in the Hindu philosophy there simply is no good or bad, only Brahman. The signs could say “You can be good because you ARE God.” That’s an Eastern way to look at it. Doesn’t mean anything and it doesn’t need to mean anything either. Just words on a bus. It could say “You better be good or you are going to be a cockroach in the next life.” That’s another pretty deadend existence. I am not sure what the Bus Sign people are really trying to say because there is such a great number of various “philosophies” about existence, God, Transcendence, etc. Are they saying you can be good in the closed system that we know as the Universe and there is nothing more? You can be Good as you evaluate Good or as the normative society around you evaluates good? You can be culturally acceptable, which is good, as long as you stay in this hemisphere? You can be good with Nature? I could rob a bank and be pretty “good” by sharing the money with the needy? Why not? What exactly is the normative standard that I must follow and why??? You can’t tell me its because certain people have a bigger stick than me—not a convincing reason to accept their standards.
Bottom line: its a very clear attack on Christianity but when I lay out my discussion it becomes very quickly a confused, troubled, dysfunctional attack. It doesn’t know what it stands for and why it believes what it believes. Its view of the world is so narrowly painted that it simply would refuse to recognize any part of the world that demonstrated itself outside of its worldview. It is a shallow group outlining shallow principles on a Bus.
