Okay, maybe we’re moving in the right direction with the Critical Mass bike thing. Michael K. has a new post here regarding last night’s Critical Mass bike ride.

Feel free to post your comments here, or at Michael’s site, (preferred).

One side note. City Councilman Mitch Harper “had” a post where he talked about “corking” during his ride last fall. I’ve searched his blog as well as Google’s cache for it and it’s nowhere to be found. Maybe Mitch has seen the light?

This writer feels that locally, people are beginning to see that an anarchist approach to the issue here in Fort Wayne won’t solve the supposed problem(s).

Mayor Henry’s office has already stepped forward with a solution. And yes, that was hard to swallow, but I have to give Tom Henry’s administration credit for being proactive on the issue.

It sounds like the CM folks in the Fort really need to take a lesson from the CM folks in NYC. The NY crew (who, there can be no denying, really are persecuted by the NYPD) have made “obeying the law during the ride” a science, in order to prevent arrests (or to ensure that – if arrests are made – they are usually bad ones…. take the case of that guy the NYPD lunged at and tackled while riding…. the arrest was thrown out and now the cop is suspended and up on criminal charges).

Seems like they should pay attention to how their compatriots in other locales are playing their cards….

  2. The local ride is hardly about advocating. The outcome of increased awareness that yes, bicyclists can and do ride on city streets, is a side bonus.

The ride is mostly about having fun with other bicyclists without fear of being killed, precisely because of the strength in numbers. That is the only reason for corking.

If there’s a way to have a ride that follows all the laws while keeping the group together then obviously that would be better for everyone.

Easier said than done when rides can number 150-200 bicyclists of all skill and speed levels, however.

Hell, down in the SOUTH part of town, bicyclists could try something “fresh”…like RIDING ON THE SIDEWALK…(let’s have a special ordinance allowing it)
After all, NO ONE seems to WALK ON THEM (preferring the streets instead of the city-provided pavements).

Or maybe we can figure a way to drive our CARS on the sidewalk…less traffic, fewer bicyclists and pedestrians, and no one blocking the damn street with triple parking.

It has the novelty of never having been tried before.

    ;)

I ride on the sidewalk all the time!! Rarely do I ever runinto anybody walking on the sidewalks. There are more walkers on the Greenway! Hmmm! Just got back from riding with Phil Keoghan the man is a machine wow!!
