I wasn’t aware that any airline was doing this.
United Airlines to Charge Overweight Passengers for Two Seats
According to the airline, the policy will be enforced only in the event that the passenger can’t be relocated next to an empty seat. If the flight is full, the passenger will have to change their ticket to the next available flight and purchase a second seat for that flight.
United is the fifth major airline to adopt a policy of this kind.
How do you feel about that?
Oddly enough our neighbors to the north don’t think so.
OTTAWA (Reuters) – Obese people have the right to two seats for the price of one on flights within Canada, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled on Thursday.

let the lawsuits begin!!!!
Hey, I’m all for the creation of a “mission-specific” air carrier…maybe call it FATASS AIRLINES.
Use some old C-130 cargo planes, modified to carry “the load”…
AT least they don’t crash as much AND get the “goods” delivered.
Now…about hiring some “loadmasters” to crate these people on board and strap ‘em down, so the cargo doesn’t shift….
(damn that Bob is a callous SOB sometimes)
Nah…just PRACTICAL.
Southwest Airlines has been doing this for a while now. United just started.
So far Southwest hasn’t to my knowledge had any lawsuits that have gone anywhere so I think United is safe.
What most non-aviation people don’t understand is that weight is such a huge factor in the profitability of flying. Everything is based on weight. And where as cargo gets charged by the pound, passengers get charged by the seat. But it is still the total weight of the passengers (and cargo) that will determine how much fuel it is going to need to complete the flight.
I could go on, but it would be like a book.
