I agree with you on any sort of "home town" hardware store (or any locally owned retail or service outlet for that matter). That said, though, my wife and I noticed this weekend that when we went to Home Depot (we were looking for something very specific for a home improvement project), the HD staff were far friendlier/more-helpful than normal.

Turns out, HD upper management reads sites like The Consumerist, and has realized the bad rep they have for abysmal help, and has made it a priority to change it. In the end we didn't get our stuff from Home Depot, but it was definitely a marked improvement over previous experiences there.

Connelly's DO-IT-BEST (nestled behind Southgate) is a store like that...
Never too much trouble to ASK YOU if you need help or how THEY can assist YOU. Never came out WITHOUT something I was looking for.
Just wish the prices were lower...like Menards.

Reminds me of an old hardware store in Philly along Torresdale Ave.
Owned by two very old LADIES...with an even older DOG sleeping near the counter.
Old style cash register (non-electric) and hard WOOD floors.
And when it came to ANYTHNING "hardware"...these gals DID KNOW JACK!
They had an inventory of forgotten parts, hard to get parts, obsolete parts, and all the contractors came to THEM for stuff...amazing.
(I'm sure Fort Wayne had such places as well at one time)

The store is gone now, as are the ladies (and the dog), but it's things like THAT you take to your grave.
Good things reminding you of good people...and times.
(and those impossible to find washers for that sink)

My "favorite" is Umber's Do It Best, in the Waynedale area. I was just there yesterday for a plumbing problem. A three generation store which started as Ace Hardware 50 or more years ago. Dave Umber still has the best service in the Fort Wayne area!
