I am not sure I agree with orphanages but I do think we do need a place to take care of children with severe mental issues that can not be addressed by parents.

I think if you would visit many of our FWCS and just observe some of the elem. students you would start to wonder if these children belong in our regular schools. Some fault with a few fall on the parents but many it is just a sad story of life. Even if we don’t like it.

Getting help for these children is often difficult at best. First, parents have to admitt to themselves that something is wrong which is highly difficult. Second, our health care system is is not designed in any form to assist in caring/treating these children. The costs are such there are few parents that could ever afford to provide such care on their own.

Children with mental issues are not easy to treat. While there are dozzens of meds out there it takes a great deal of time and effort on behalf of the parents and doctors to find the right meds and the dosage that works for a child. Even then they do not work 100% of the time.

I will agree there are parents out there that just want to rid themselves of raising a child. To me if they don’t want to is fine as long as they want to spend their time in jail. But I caution everyone not to even get a paint brush out to paint everyone in the same color.

What is so sad is these kids are not bad children but ones with severe mental issues. However they disrupt classes for five to ten minutes a day. Some days is higher and if a class has two or three students like this the lost time multiplies.

Maybe it’s time to rethink (and reopen) something we used to have in my day called ORPHANAGES…

And if history serves, we DID have many people who came from such places to become DAMN fine citizens and role models.
(all because their mother couldn’t…or wouldn’t take care of them)

I recall one place in Philly (St Stephens), along the Delaware river, run by nuns…always dropped off toys & stuffed bears for the kids there at Christmas.

I hate the fact that they left the children there but im torn becuase those kids are much better off than being left with those parents. would you want those children to be with parents that left them at the doorstep like that? the law is terrible at first glance but its better than having those kids abused and mistreated or worse just ignored by terrible parents. as a prolifer wouldnt i be a hypocrite to let these children die or be scared by ambivilant parents? the law has pointed to a problem in the system as conservatives shouldnt we be trying to fix the problem rather than gripe about the law? i would gladely take in a child that a parent no longer wants on the off chance that parent would harm the child

There is a cliche’ that says “no good deed goes unpunished”. A bit cynical but true. Nebraska made a good law, simply flawed, and through good deeds the flaw was wrung out. Call worthless parents what you will but I believe it is better for a child to find a safe haven with people who either care about or will learn to love that child.
Not having a “safe haven” for these kids would likely subject them to far worse than the initial trauma of being “left”.

As to the child molester stuff, this is a public venue and I am sure my methods would offend many of you, so we will leave it at that. I will say that I would not force sterilize by chemical means, the old mechanical method works so much better…

Permanent sterilization is a bit too far, but I think requiring Norplant as part of the terms for probation and parole might be a good idea.

She CONCEIVED the child with a convicted molester. I just can’t get past that. Indiana needs a law that makes it illegal to leave the state with your kid and return without him.

I like this law. It seperates children from parents who doen’t deserve to have them and would likely cause more harm to the kids if forced to stay attached to them. The only problem is they forgot to add a requirement that the derilict parents must submit to forced sterilization in order to not be prosecuted.

How is it that the system is letting children live in a home with a convicted child molester??? I know of one around here who married and has a baby with the new wife. He quit a job in the duck factory here and went to work selling Rainbow Vacuum Systems? So help me, if I were 1. so stupid as to have a demonstration in my home for a sweeper….and then to find out he is a convicted child molester…in my home with my kids???? Well I am pretty sure I would be suing Rainbow for starters….but wait, I am off topic, or am I?

So this woman dumped her child because he is 8 and not fully toliet trained, claws paint and clogs the toliet…The welfare system did NOT fail her or her child, SHE has FAILED her child. EOD.
