The fundraiser will also feature a silent auction and music provided by the University of Saint Francis Jazz Ensemble. The silent auction will feature fine restaurant gift certificates, rounds of golf, artwork, a holiday carriage ride, and more.
One hundred percent of the money raised goes towards the Brenda Hanchar Foundation. The Foundation is a not-for-profit organization incorporated in 2006, created by Brenda’s husband Thomas J. Hanchar. The Foundation is named after a local compassionate nurse, Brenda Hanchar. Some have said she was an angel. Brenda was diagnosed in August of 2003 and succumbed to the ravages of cancer within 4 months. The Brenda Hanchar Foundation is staffed entirely by volunteers; all donations and sponsorships go directly to the cleaning, repair and purchasing of needed equipment.
It is the mission of the Brenda Hanchar Foundation to help those who are unable to afford physician directed medical equipment (hospital beds, wheelchairs, walkers, etc.), medical supplies or prescription assisted medication to enhance and maintain a reasonable quality of life. BHF does this by providing to individuals who cannot afford medical insurance and meet income guidelines based on the Federal Poverty Level. The medical equipment is provided for free on a loan basis by the financial support from the community.
It is estimated that up to 30% of the population is without medical insurance either public or private in Allen County alone. Recent surveys of various Allen County hospital discharge planners finds that approximately 150 to 200 people are sent home from the hospital monthly without the means to purchase prescribed medications or medical equipment.
