The coal industry in the United States employs 82,959 people 1. (PDF file), (as of 2006). Obama plans on putting all of them on the unemployment line. However, with his wealth redistribution plan I guess they have nothing to worry about, right?
From NewsBusters
Obama: “So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.”
Amazing that this statement by Obama about bankrupting the coal industry has been kept under wraps until this time.
Obama: “So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.
It’s just that it will bankrupt them.”
UPDATE: NewsBusters’ Tom Blumer has found out that the San Francisco Chronicle story published on January 18 based upon this January 17 interview did not include any mention of Obama’s willingness to bankrupt the coal industry which you can hear on the audio. You can read the story here when you scroll down to the “In His Own Words” section. Way to cover up for The One, SF Chronicle! More here.

There is not even a “clean coal” project under consideration in the US for coal from Vig, Pa, and SE Ohio. The only clean coal project is Obama’s home state of Illiniois for a small generation plant that will serve no more then 100,000 homes, cost over $2 billion, and allow the private investors walk away in five years. Us taxpayers will be able to then clean up the mess and tear it down…. That is the American way.
Just a note coal from Southern Indiana and Southern Illiniois is not the same as located in the Vig, Pa and SE Ohio. So a system working in Illiniois will not work the same.
What people don’t get is the $500 or $1,000 rebate they will get will be gone in a second with higher electric costs when he hits the electric companies with a “carbon cap” tax. That the tax will get pushed right down the line to us rate payers.
I can not believe how many people are so hyped up over his, if you ever see it tax rebate. For the average family in Indiana it means no more then 3% of there pay. People are missing is if everyone (outside of the rich bastards) get a 3% increase then within months guess what? The darn cost of living goes up 3%. So enjoy it for the few months and hope like heck the company you work for doesn’t lay you off.
People have been so out of touch they have failed to watch the stock market. As the point spread between Obama and McCain has changed that within 2-3 days the stock market has reacted. The wider the spread the bigger loss. Then when it closes the stock market turns up slightly. No, Obama did not cause the crash but what few investors (only 1/3 to 1/4 of the number of share of stock are being traded daily over what is normal of 4 billion share) they see capitol gains on short term profits maybe getting taxed to hell. Also business sectors that Obama is going to tax the hell out of will not see investors returning.
But don’t worry… Obama will come to the mike and make an impressive speach that will have everyone on the edge of their seat. They will go Wow and all of that. Then they will be able to get up and go to the food bank going, “He is going to save us!”
How hard is it to comprehend that we can’t burn coal forever? Eventually it runs out and so do the jobs. Get with the 21st century.
David,
We have an estimated coal reserve of 800 to 900 gigatons. That’s a 200-300 year reserve.
David,
Let see, you don’t want nuclear power and you don’t want coal power. Please don’t tell me that you think wind power and solar are the final answer…. You will not live long enough to see that.
Wind and Solar can assist and should be pursued.
Looks like Obama is dragging many of the tree huggers back out. However, the west coast ones will not be with them. California tree huggers have gotten the message. You want power 24/7 then it is nuclear or coal.
What many of the wind power is all people miss is here in the lower 48 that when we have extreme heat waves and cold snaps in the highly productive wind areas the winds drop to near ZERO. Just what you need is when it gets real hot or cold their is no electric power.
JQT:
I think (and this is ONLY my belief) that we can find some harmoneous MIXTURE of ALL technologies without depleting any or all of them (or the natural resources) in the process.
BUT…those in charge (and we know who THEY are) have to be willing to not just “talk” about it, or “explore” the possibilities, but invest TIME…and MONEY into these sources of energy.
ALL of them.
There’s also TIDAL energy alternatives, as well as the previously mentioned nuclear, wind, solar, and even fusion (when they work the bugs out of that).
Hell, we even have trash-to-steam..who’da thunk?
I mean I sure don’t want a future like BLADE RUNNER..or even MAX HEADROOM, and certainly not like MAD MAX, but we need to collectively act…and the sooner the better, because ANY tech that is implemented TODAY will take at least TEN YEARS to come to fruition (and priced so that we average Joes & Janes can afford it).
