SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Comcast Corp, the largest U.S. cable operator, said on Thursday it will cap customers’ Internet usage starting October 1, in a bid to ensure the best service for the vast majority of its subscribers.

Comcast said it was setting a monthly data usage threshold of 250 gigabytes per account for all residential high-speed Internet customers, or the equivalent of 50 million e-mails or 124 standard-definition movies.

“If a customer exceeds more than 250 GB and is one of the heaviest data users who consume the most data on our high-speed Internet service, he or she may receive a call from Comcast’s Customer Security Assurance (CSA) group to notify them of excessive use,” according to the company’s updated Frequently Asked Questions on Excessive Use.

Customers who top 250 GB in a month twice in a six-month timeframe could have service terminated for a year.

Good news for Verizon.

Wow…looks like COMCAST just grew another FOOT…and they’re already rarin’ to SHOOT that one too…!
    Amazing.
    Glad we have Verizon.

  2. There is no way I send that many emails or down load that many movies. How much “Madden” online does that translate into?

I hope this is not a trend we will see with other providers. I am not sure just how much we use the internet at work, but I can tell you that all of my research is done online and completed reports are emailed daily and many of our completed reports average 50 pages with pictures and everything.

Comcast will never be able to compete with Verizon UNLESS Comcast installs its own Fiber Optics. My husband works for Verizon, but not on the FIOS department. However, if anyone needs to switch to FIOS, my husband could expedite the process (or even speed up the resolution of any problems that are occurring with the service) by merely working for Verizon. He designs circuits for commerical telephone service.

Denise, that’s quite an offer! Down here at River City we have been petitioning Verizon to provide us with FIOS, but they refuse! There are a handful of us who would like to subscribe, and we’re a mile from the Courthouse, for Pete’s sake! Back when they were offering free flat screen tv, I did everything I could think of, nobody would return my calls. I’ve even been to Public Works in the City County building to see if they could help, to no avail.
As it happens, I would be very happy to make the change at this particular time because Comcast just discontinued channel 74, local Doppler radar, and that’s essential to contractors like us.
We met the other evening, you know that I am sympathetic to Matt Kelty, and outraged at his persecution . . .
