Despite Negative Campaign, Jill Long Thompson Can’t Gain Ground
Posted by AWB in UncategorizedINDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Republican Party Chairman Murray Clark sent the following letter to GOP officials in all 92 counties Monday.
Dear Republican Friends:
The opening weekend of the 2008 Olympic Games brought us a lot of what we expect. There were stunning opening ceremonies, early gold medals for the United States…and another round of pessimism from Jill Long Thompson.
The predictable challenger to Gov. Mitch Daniels continues to follow her dubious history when it comes to negative campaigns. And a few weeks after airing her first cynical ad of the campaign, she reached back into her bag and pulled out another.
See Jill’s gonna get me a job as a dump truck driver.
Folks, these are Washington, DC, dollars at work. It makes you wonder, “Can we really expect three solid months of TV spots trashing all the progress our state has made in the last three and a half years?” That’s the very definition of “politics as usual”. But, given the poll numbers, it’s no surprise that this is what it has come to.
A recent poll of 500 likely voters conducted last week, August 3-5, by the Indiana Republican Party showed Gov. Daniels continues to hold a huge 18 point lead, 53-35. That’s quite a margin considering this was one race national Democrats and their special interests have been targeting. Additionally, the governor’s favorability ratings are at 60%, the highest of any governor in our region.
This week, Gov. Daniels will be touring the state for two reasons. One – announcing jobs – is something we’ve come to expect on a regular basis in the past four years. The other – laying out a second-term vision for education reform – will show more bold leadership and innovative ideas that has brought Indiana out of a sea of despair and onto an island of growth.
Under Gov. Daniels, these are days where Indiana is running far ahead of its neighbors – not coincidentally all of whom have Democratic governors – and we’ve had the good fortune to enjoy success where others continue to struggle. But that doesn’t mean we’ve finished the job, nor are we underestimating what the Democratic special interests might concoct in the coming weeks of the campaign. One prediction: more and more negativity. One final fact: despite Jill Long Thompson’s Washington D.C.-funded jabs at our governor, the accomplishments are not going away. And that is why we must continue to work harder every day.
