Democrats walkout of Congress – Republicans still working
Posted by AWB in UncategorizedAmazing…
Hoping that the nation’s energy problem will go away if they just go home and ignore it for a few weeks, the Democrats have voted to adjourn early, turned off the lights in the lower chamber, and are trying to lock the doors to make sure no business can be done until September.
The fly in the ointment? Fifteen or so 22 House Republicans, led by Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH), refused to leave the floor, where — after the Democrats turned off the lights and the microphones — they continued talking gas prices and energy solutions, which the House was scheduled to do this afternoon already before Pelosi, et al declared an early adjournment.
Pelosi has sent Capitol Police to clear the press gallery lock the doors, in an obvious effort to keep the American people from every finding out about this via the free press, but Reps. Bunt, Shadegg, and Hoekstra have been taking turns remaining with media in the gallery in order to keep it open.
At one point, Shadegg “figured out how to get the lights and microphones back on,” a House insider tells me — but they have since been shut off once again.Update (1:27 pm CDT) Another email from a Hill insider:
“Floor is full of staff and visitors. All cheering.
Members are even cancelling flights.
Chanting vote now.”
Update 4@1:10pm CDT An email from a Hill insider says, “We’re here for the haul. Blunt just called in to order pizza.” Nice.
Update 3@1:01pm CDT Politico reports:
Republicans are literally hugging each other on the House floor. Rep. Don Manzullo (R-Ill.), not normally known as an distinguished orator, just gave a rousing speech, accusing Democrats of stifling dissent. He referenced President John Quincy Adams, who returned as a House member after being defeated in his bid for re-election as president. Waving his arms and yelling, Manzullo brought the crowd (including a lot of staff shipped in by GOP leaders to fill up the place), and he left the floor to hugs from his colleagues. You don’t see that up here every day.
Update@12:17pm CDT: The Whip’s office just sent the following email:
House Democrats are no where to be found. House Republicans are on the Floor willing and ready to work to lower the price of gas at the pump.
Members are encouraged to come to the Floor.
NOTE: If any Member has a megaphone, please bring it to the Floor. Folks in the gallery [are] engaged and wanting to hear us. However, the Speaker’s Office refuses to turn on the microphones.
