SOUDER SUPPORTS BIPARTISAN BILL TO
FUND BULLETPROOF VEST INITIATIVE
LAST YEAR, ALLEN COUNTY RECEIVED $29,677 THROUGH THIS PROGRAM

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mark Souder announced today that he is cosponsoring the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Act (H.R. 6045), bipartisan legislation that would authorize funding for law enforcement agencies to help them purchase bulletproof vests.

“Bulletproof vests are extremely effective protection for the men and women in law enforcement serving our community and the nation,” Souder said.  “I am pleased to cosponsor this bill, which was introduced by my Hoosier colleague Pete Visclosky.  Last year, Allen County received more than $29,000 through this program to help purchase 347 additional bulletproof vests.  While this kind of protection is extremely effective, it cannot protect a police officer who isn’t wearing one.  This bill will help ensure that such tragedies don’t occur.”

In Fiscal Year 2007 alone, the program provided $28.6 million to state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the United States for the purchase of around 180,173 new bulletproof vests.

H.R. 6045 was authored and introduced U.S. Rep. Peter Visclosky (D-IN).  It has been referred for further action to the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.

  1. What an utterly stupid program!

Lets have the Federal Government collect money in taxes. Then send it to a group of beaurocrats who will spend some of it on their salaries and organization. Then split it up and give it back to local governments with orders on how to spend it.

    Good grief…

Just lower Federal taxes and let local Governments determine their own taxing policies and spending policies.

The Federal Government needs to shrink and big government Republicans like Mark Souder need to get that through their thick skulls…

    Hey Mike,

You said it all, I hope everyone elses also see’s it this way. The only time he looks like he’s doing anything, is around this time of the year, every two years. He needs their money and votes. This is one guy that won’t give him anything!

I don’t mind paying taxes to help those who are supposed to be protecting and serving. Much rather put my tax money there than bailing out banks who knowingly issued loans for homes to people who couldn’t afford them.

That figures out to $158.73 per vest. Last time I checked, even a cheap vest cost half a grand. I guess the remaining $350 was the cut taken out by the beuracrats.

    Mike:
One Congressman, no mattered how well intentioned or not, cannot give us smaller or bigger Government. I am all in favor of getting rid of ear marks, and 75 % of the Government bureaucrats and to get the Federal Government back to the role that the Constitution intended. The genie is out of the bottle and it would take 218 Congressmen and Women to put the genie back and I am sorry to say, that is not going to happen; not unless that is one of the changes Obama is talking about; and you can bet that will be high on Montagano list also.
Mike they already took our money, I want it back, preferable in my own pocket; but that is not going to happen; so I will be satisfied with my money coming back in to our area. I hope Congressman Souder sucks every dime out of Washington he can get; it will be better than our money going to either coast.
It is evident from some of the past post that you do not have Congressman Souder on you Christmas Card list, but what should he do; worry about something he cannot change and let the other Congressman gobble up the money for their areas? It looks like Congressman Souder is damned if he does or damned if he doesn’t, personally, keep it up Congressman Souder.

  6. Raced White Male says:

Actually, Phil, you have that backwards. Assuming they cost $500, the question isn’t, where did the remaining $350 go, but where did it come from?

I’d be a lot more inclined to question the quantity actually purchased. $28.6M is a very round number. But then a precise quantity of 180,173 vests is given, softened by “around”. What?

  7. Bobett Kelley says:

It would be amazing if Mr. Souder dialogued with his District.

He is certainley out of touch.

  8. El Fatale,
Except for every dime that Souder squeezes out of Washington, over 400 other representatives insist on their cut too. Souder is perpetuating the viscous circle

  9. El Fatal says:

And if Congressman Souder stopped, all the others would stop also, give me a break. He is working in a poor system, but working.

  10. On the other hand, if you really want to help Souder bring money home, consider this: Districts that are highly contested get more federal dollars. So start telling poll takers that you won’t be voting for Souder, and watch the money roll in.

  11. if the economy keeps getting worse, the cops wont have to worry about wearing vests- it will be all of washington dc. as the government should fear the citizens, not the other way around.
not me- i’ll be sitting at home, in my driveway, watching rome burn. gleefully. As Long as i have a “cold one”-(In my cold dead fingers?)-I really dont care anymore. I hope those idiots do start WW3- with Iran, and the whole middle east. I’m 4f, and refuse to cooperate with the govt, the military, or the authorities.
btw- get your free copy of the quran- nice leather hardbound edition- really nice-

and read what all the fuss is about. remember- most islamics are just like garden variety catholics- except muslims dont eat pork, nor drink alcohol- which is why i could never be one- I love my beer, and bratwursts.
My red checkered tablecloth on my picnic table used to belong to hajji- but he lost his head, and no longer had nay use for it- so now I dine on hajjis Najaf.
    giggle!
Hey Obama- make sure you eat lots of bratwursts, and a bew beers, in highly visible venues- that will kill the Islamic sleeper cell rumors, for sure..

  12. mark Andrews says:

I think our local officals did a great job of buying! 29,000 for 347 jackets!!! WOW thats alot better than the feds!!! For or against Souder?!! Even hard core Repubs can see the man only believes in himself….Remeber that only 545 people are in government. So don’t pass the buck for those lazy bums who don’t care anymore…
