Allen County GOP Readies Greeting for President Clinton
12-foot banner along route from airport proclaims Allen County “McCain Country”
(March 18, 2008) – When President Clinton arrives in Fort Wayne today, a special greeting from the Allen County Republican Party will await his arrival along the Broadway corridor.
A 60-square-foot banner (12-feet long by 5-feet high), was hung this afternoon on the Broadway Plaza, near the Shine and Hardin Law Offices, a prominent place along one of the most frequently traveled routes into downtown from the Fort Wayne International Airport.
The banner, donated by Graycraft Signs Plus, 2428 Getz Road, reads: “The Allen County Republican Party Welcomes President Bill Clinton: This Is McCain Country”
“When President Clinton drives by, he should keep in mind that no matter whether it’s him, his wife or Senator Obama at the top of the Democrat ticket, Allen County will always be Republican country,” said Steven R. Shine, chairman of the Allen County Republican Party, “and that means that in 2008, Allen County is John McCain country.”
President Clinton twice lost Allen County to Republican presidential candidates. In 1992, he lost to the George Bush/Dan Quayle ticket by a margin of 50,766 to 36,598. Four years later, in 1996, he lost again, this time to Bob Dole and Jack Kemp by a margin of 53,798 to 38,189.
“President Clinton’s results at the ballot box here may be the reason why he chose to never visit Fort Wayne during eight years as President of the United States,” Shine said.
The Republican Party’s dominance of presidential results in Allen County has continued since then. In 2000, President George W. Bush beat Al Gore in Allen County 70,426 to 41,636 votes. In 2004, Allen County helped re-elect the Bush/Cheney ticket by a margin of 72,314 to 40,869.
“Voters in Allen County have rejected the Democrats’ national policies and politics over and over again,” Shine said. “It is John McCain who stands for the values we hold so dear in this community. I want to make sure that President Clinton knows what Fort Wayne is all about.”

Oh the things Shine chooses to spend party resources on. The criteria must be something like “What will make Steve feel better” and/or “what will get Steve in the spotlight”.. Silly political pundits usually have a different set of criteria. They follow something like: “What will gain us the most votes”.
Shine’s ego is something to behold…I am sure the Dems hope he Never steps down.
In defense of chairman, Shine you must not have read the whole release.
Personally, I think it’s hilarious.
Dan,
Some people dont like those pesky facts getting in the way of their argument.
There should be an addendum to that sign saying “Except when it comes to the Mayor’s office”.
Do you really think the motorcade will come down Broadway? The best bet would be Baer Field Thruway to Paulding. Paulding to Lafayette. Then Lafayette to Washington. Mostly one-way traffic. Easier for the FWPD and the ACSD.
I think it is pretty darn funny myself…

I find it funny……but maybe Clinton chose to come here this time because he heard how screwed up the local GOP is…….
Just as an aside, I did read the whole thing…but resources does not refer only to money. The ‘favor’, in-kind contribution, time and effort are all what I meant. Since it already said the banner was free, I did not mention it again.
By the way, the motorcade did NOT come down Broadway.
