Referendum may resetclocks on time debate
INDIANAPOLIS — The federal government moved the time zone boundary in November for the second time in less than two years, but that may not be the final word on the subject.
A state lawmaker from Southwestern Indiana wants to put the question to the votersRep. Kreg Battles, D-Vincennes, has introduced legislation, House Bill 1038, that would hold a statewide referendum in 2008: It would ask Hoosier voters whether Indiana should be on a single time zone — and if so, which zone, Central or Eastern.
Although the November 2008 referendum would be advisory only, Battles hopes it would create a mandate on a controversy that until now has generated confusion, bedeviled lawmakers and made Indiana the butt of jokes for years.
Twelve of Indiana’s 92 counties are on Central time; the rest on Eastern. Having Indiana divided between two time zones is a problem in border counties, Battles said.
Get over it Battles. And what’s with the spelling of his first name? I honestly cannot believe that some people are still upset over the timezone change. Personally, I love it. One more hour to mow the lawn, fish, golf – whatever. I love it. If you’re old and don’t like going to bed during the daylight hours, but some new window coverings that won’t allow the sunlight in.
A 1984 Fortune magazine estimated that a seven-week extension of DST would yield an additional $30 million for 7-Eleven stores, and the National Golf Foundation estimated the extension would increase golf industry revenues $200 million to $300 million.

12 other states have two times zones. Indiana would be the butt of jokes if it changed to Central.
For all of those that want to go to Central Time Zone, do me a favor. Look out your window right now (it is 4:50) and it is nearly dark. Now, if we were on Central Time it would be 3:45 and dark. Yea, that sounds like a lot of fun. Lets lose an hour of sun light in the summer so we can add another hour of darkness in the winter!!!!
I frequently sleep during the day, because I work third shift a lot. I just tape aluminum foil over the windows.
Personally, I think the feds should abolish daylight savings time. But whatever they decide to do, they should make a decision and stick with it. Constantly changing the boundaries and the dates that we are supposed to reset the clocks creates confusion.
Time zones are laid out to be 7.5 degrees on either side of the the defined central meridian lines which are appropriately 15 degrees apart. The 75 degree central meridian (Eastern Time) slashes through New York City and the 90 degree central meridian passes through St. Louis. The 82 degree meridian goes through Columbus, OH which should be the approximate western edge to the Eastern Zone. Observing political division lines would start the Central Time Zone at the Indiana state line.
How did Indiana ever get to be on Eastern Time?
Gadfly- Hey, I learned something today about time zones!
Thanks for that info!
