My bad! I had to watch this video a couple times. The officer appears to be striking Snyder while he’s sitting on him. There was a second officer who could have assisted in the restraint if Snyder really was struggling that much. No matter what Snyder did, the officer was not justified in striking someone who is in a prone position.

Ok, this is what I think I see in the video:
As the councilman is leaving, someone jeers “See you, Hitler!”. Snyder pauses and looks into the crowd, apparently to see who shouted the insult. The police officer pushes Snyder to keep him moving. Then the scuffle takes place off camera.

I think the officer could have been more gentle when he was trying to get Snyder to move. At the same time, shoving could be considered reasonable force to get someone to move. I cannot be certain what took place off camera.

This may sound like a cop-out (pardon the pun) but I do not think there is sufficient evidence in this footage alone to implicate either the officer or Mr. Snyder. What did the witnesses say?

It appears this police officer was using his badge to inflict physical harm on a civilian who was already ON THE GROUND with his hands behind his back. Look like abuse of power and assault to me….

This cop is a bully…. I’m sure while most respect their position of authority and power and are careful to use it, this guy doesn’t.

While you were a radio station newscaster during the 1980′s,
obviously, you missed investigativing & reporting about this same police officer in Roseland, In. attacking and choking a person of interest.

Unfortunately, the fact remains, there is a small rotten apple.

And I hope this does not tarnish the Police …the best of the best…

I respect Police officers that put their life on the line, protect & serve & believe in the call of duty.

Bobett, while this particular officer and his department may have earned your wrath, I think a more thorough reading of my post will convince you that I am referring to law enforcement in general. I am familiar with the area to a degree, having been a newscaster for a radio station in Niles in the 80′s. While I was not there and did not see the events from a firsthand point of view, I am distressed that so many are willing to pain all law enforcement officers with the same broad brush based upon the conduct of a few.

Roseland Police department has a problem.

I’m from South Bend, In & have ties to Niles-Buchanan, Mi just north
of Roseland, In. It’s a fact, this small area between South Bend, Granger
… a few miles to the north & just a few miles south of the Michigan border is… Roseland, In.

In fact, it’s so close to Notre Dame on all sides you can touch it.

This cop is scum. This is not an isolated incident.
What this police officier did was wrong.

This story is one I’ve been following on southbendtribune.com. Snyder and his wife are crazy people that both sat on the town council. She would have people arrested if they asked a question at a town council meeting, arrested if they said “Amen”, etc. He is a button pusher that is $200K behind on his child support to his disabled child in Texas. The story would make a wonderful one hour prime time special.

Kody, please try to keep in mind that these are isolated, yet highly publicized incidents. The dramatic majority of law enforcement officers in this country are very judicious in their use of force, adhering to an established continuum. While there may be incidents that pop up now and then, the good work of thousands of good cops across the nation is routinely overlooked.

Between this incindent and the situation with the taser down in Florida it is becoming increasingly difficult to have a positive view of law enforcement.
