Housing, retail plan advances From the Journal Gazette June 26, 2007

A $40 million mixed-use development dreamed up by a southeast Fort Wayne church moved closer to becoming reality Monday.

The Fort Wayne Plan Commission on Monday approved plans for South Anthony Pointe, a development containing 124 single-family houses, a 120-bed hotel, offices, stores and restaurants south of Southtown Centre.

[..] Plan commission members asked whether a NIPSCO gas main, which runs under the site, would affect where homes are built. Come As You Are and its partners have met with NIPSCO and are confident the gas main won’t interfere with the layout, said Tom Niezer, the attorney representing the church.

More than 100 people attended the South Anthony Pointe hearing last week, and most supported the project. One opponent, Charles Garnette, expressed concerns about the church’s pastor, the Rev. Anthony Payton, failing to make payments on his Lafayette Esplanade home five years ago. The house went into foreclosure and later was sold at a sheriff’s sale in 2004, according to court records. Payton said the foreclosure was the result of “a business deal that went bad.” The plan commission declined to consider Garnette’s testimony because it did not relate to the proposed rezoning or the development’s design.

Six plan commission members who were present – Smith, Bynum, Barney Niezer, David Ross, Connie Haas Zuber and Michael Bultemeier – voted in favor of the project. President Judi Wire did not vote because she was chairing the meeting.

Oh those Neizer boys..

Another potential for disaster on the SOUTH side….
