On February 3rd two sex offenders moved into the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission so I decided to do a little poking around. Here’s what I found.
Christopher Michael Gill was convicted 20/09/2006 of Sexual Misconduct with a Minor, a class c felony in Indiana and was sentenced to 3 years in prison. He was released on February 1st of this year. His home address is listed as the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. He also lists an address in Columbia City that sits on The Links of Eagle Glen, a Columbia City Golf Course. He does not a place of employment.
Robert William Karn was convicted of Child Molesting 01/19/2005 and sentenced to 4 years in prison. He was released January 31st. The only address he lists is the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. He does not a place of employment.
James Matthew Woods was convicted of Child Molesting 10/13/2005 and sentenced to 5 years work release. The only address he lists is the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. He does not a place of employment.
Cartrell Harris: Conviction 10/19/2004 for Sexual Battery. Sentence: 3 years. Served 6 months. Home address Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. He does not a place of employment.
Perry Ray Plunkett: Conviction 01/15/2004 Sexual Misconduct with a Minor. Sentence 10 years. Released after 2 years on 12/29/2006. Home address Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. He does not a place of employment.
Charles Allen Zink: Conviction 2 counts of Child Molesting 07/24/2000. Sentence 8 years. Released 01/12/2007. Home address Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. He does not a place of employment.
Patrick Edward Nottage: Conviction Date: 08/13/2001 for Rape. Sentenced 08/13/2001 and released 11/02/2006. Home address Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. He does not a place of employment.
Michael Eugene Starkey: This guy must have moved up the food chain. He’s employed by the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. Conviction Date: 10/18/1995 of Child Molesting. Release date of 02/18/1999.
Gary Michael Vasko: Convicted in Arizona of Attempting to Commit Child Molestation. Sentence 10 years and released 12/27/2006. Home address Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. He does not a place of employment.
Scott Thomas Dyben. I’m beginning to see a pattern here. Employer? You guessed it. Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. Mr. Dyben was convicted on 04/24/2000 of Child Molesting. He was sentenced to 4 years in prison but the entire sentence was suspended and he was given 4 years of probation instead. He now lives in New Haven.
Jack Vaughn: Employer? Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. He was convicted on 11/15/1999 of Child Molesting and sentenced to 8 years in prison. He was released on 10/22/2003.
Kenneth Mauk: Convicted of Rape, Criminal Deviate Conduct and Criminal Confinement of a victim under the age of 18 in Ripley County, Indiana on 11/08/1985. Sentenced to 20 years in prison. Not sure of the release date for those charges, BUT he was convicted again on 09/11/2000 for sexual misconduct with a minor and sentenced to 20 years but was released 7 years later on 03/28/2006. Home address Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. He does not list a place of employment.
From the Rescue Mission’s web site:
When men first arrive at The Mission they receive basic crisis services such as food, shelter, clothing and personal counseling to assess their needs. Shelter is provided in our Guest Dorm for up to four weeks.
But if you over stay your welcome we might just have a low paying job for you.
So that’s 12 rapist, child molesters and various sex offenders all living under one roof. I bet they can’t wait for the Harrison Square project to be completed so it will enhance their night life.
I’ve actually met Mr. Dyben and Mr. Starkey when I was delivering donations on several occasions in the past. The last time I delivered enough Coney Dogs and Chili to serve 100 meals. That will not happen again.
Stay tuned. Later this afternoon I will have a follow-up to this story.

in your poking research, did you find out if they were actually guilty of these crimes? just because they wear the title of sex offender, doesnt mean they are actually guilty of said crime.
Ten of the twelve men pictured above were found guilty in a court of law of child molesting. The other two were convicted of sexual battery and rape. I am shocked to learn they are living in a homeless shelter. But then again, the more thought I put into it, the more it makes sense.
In many cases, the victim is a family member or friend, and these offenders are often times not welcome to return to their own homes. They have a difficult time getting or keeping a job due to their history, and there are rules of where they can and cannot live as far as being too close to a park or a school. I understand they have obstacles and it makes sense they are ending up homeless. It makes sense that they are ending up at the rescue mission
These men destroyed the lives of other people in ways as horrible as if they commited murder. These crimes should be as severely punishable as murder. But they are not, and these men and women are being released back out into the world to go forward and live a happy life in spite of what they have done to one or more innocent child. Too bad these innocent kids can’t get a 20 year sentence with ten years suspended and good behavior rewards and then all of the sudden to be free to live a carefree and happy life. No, the victims don’t get such a light sentence. They get a lifetime of horrific memories and issues they must deal with. They never walk away from it.
Over and over again, many people claim that offenders can be reformed. I say I don’t want to test that bogus theory out on my kids or any other innocent children. I believe the judicial system is way too light on sexual offenders and child molestors specifically. Obviously I am not one to offer up much compassion to these individuals, but I can see why they are ending up in the rescue mission.
I guess, considering the funding for these missions comes from charitable contributions, if you happen to be a contributor to the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission, did you know this is how your money is being spent? Is this the contribution you thought you were making?
I for one wish they would treat this crime with a little more respect. Take it from someone that has been through this on the other end. You never get over what has happen to you no matter old or young.
Once a sex offender always a sex offender. Being kept under lock and key makes you think you have changed, wrong….once out, old ways seem to sneak back in.
Dan, thank you for keeping the spotlight on the low lifes!
I imagine the Rescue Mission believes they are helping out but I hope they keep one eye open at all times!
This is one VERY disturbing “trend” with these housing “arrangements” you mentioned.
I’ve been homeless on the streets of Fort Wayne since Nov. 21st. I have spent all the holidays alone, I have no family and have had to endure this years high number of zero to below zero temperatures, rainfall and snow on my own in the outdoors.
I am not now nor have I ever been a criminal, just a god fearing hard working young man who has fell on hard times and has had trouble getting work as many others as well.
I have survived by receiving food from Fort Wayne’s generous food pantries and local churches, in which I am very great full for.
I have been told numerous times or asked if I had gone to the mission shelter. The above information pertaining to the ongoings and content of individuals who are or have, been occupying the mission are one of the exact reason why I have chosen NOT to go to the shelter for help or housing assistance.
It is a shame, a very big one, that honest people in true need of help who have done no wrong are out here suffering on the streets, freezing at night, some times digging through trash for food and not being so much as able to shower or bathe while predators receive help from hard earned tax dollars.
You know I just ran across this article and I have to say why is everyone so hard on sex offenders they made a mistake. I for one say why not let them stay in one place at least they will be easy to find. Also the reoffend rate is low. And street kid you choose to not stay there it is your own choice.
tango..
I don’t know where you got your ideas, but the FACTS are very serious.
“Sex offenders were about four times more likely than non-sex offenders to be arrested for another sex crime after their discharge from prison –– 5.3 percent of sex offenders versus 1.3 percent of non-sex offenders.”
That is from the Bureau of Justice Statistics: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/crimoff.htm
The crime they commit is horrendous and affects children their entire life. You wouldn’t consider letting a mass murder off easy would you?
