
“Almighty God, we come before you today humbled by the magnitude of the responsibilities of this office. May you help us to realize that those who have been given the greatest responsibility need the greatest guidance. We pray you will show us what is good, and what is required of us. We pray for your insight, your compassion and your strength. Amen.”
Indiana House members opened their session on Monday with this short, pre-approved prayer read by House Speaker Pat Bauer (D) of South Bend. This was the first time since November 2005 when U.S. District Judge David Hamilton sided with the ACLU of Indiana, ruling that prayers offered from the podium should be non-sectarian and should not invoke Jesus Christ or endorse any particular religion.

People are citing this court decision as an issue of 1st amendment rights, (ie free speach and fredom of religion), however, the real scare is the fact that a court is allowed to dictate to the legislature what it can and can not do in it’s own house. This is a total and dangerous disregard for the separation of powers provided by the federal constitution and the state constitution.
