I’ll be down for a bit. You see, while I thought I was only passing a kidney stone week before last, my appendix had actually started a slow leak and then somehow according to the surgeon self-cauterized itself until this past Friday night, when I started feeling some pains in my abdomen. By Saturday night at 7:00 I was in white pain, bringing tears and screams of pain.
My son and I were at the lake and I slept in the living room so he wouldn’t hear my cussing and moaning, just trying to not scare the kid. Being a typical guy I figured they’d go away with a good night’s sleep. Boy, was I wrong. By 6 a.m. I couldn’t bear it any longer and had him drive me to the hospital. Every bump we hit felt like a thousand knives going into my abdomen.
Soon I was on the operating table and I now no longer possess an appendix. I do however have this nice looking caterpillar-like scar sealed shut with metal staples. They had to open me all the way up as opposed to laparoscopic surgery so they could scrub the poison out of my lower abdomen with a saline-based antibotic solution. August has not been my month.
I’m going to take a couple of Darvocets and go to bed. And yes, typing this hurt like hell but it’s good fodder for a Blog

Glad you had a useless part removed before it could do harm. (Hmmm…that does sound like something you advocate on this blog).
Anyway, your photo reminded me of Lyndon Johnson and this famous picture:

sorry to hear about your operation. The same thing happened to me in college. I thought I drank some bad whiskey or something the night before. I also have a matching scar! They said they couldn’t find my appendix the doc just shook his head! Get well soon.
Appendicitis…not a nice way to go through life…been there, done that (and have a nice 2 inch scar from my youth to prove it).
Peritonitis is a REAL concern if it ruptures….thank your lucky stars the hospital staff moved as fast for you.
Actually, when I was in the hospital with ACUTE appendicitis, the damn thing ruptured…and I never saw SO many hospital personnel move SO damn fast in my whole life!
Imagine being 7 years old…and having ALL these people rushing about, prepping you for surgery at like 4 AM…the phrase “scared as hell” comes to mind.
And be glad you didn’t have to suffer from being knocked out with ETHER…
That stuff will make you sicker. And try tossing some cookies while in excruciating pain from an “impromptu” surgery…
But that a few lifetimes ago…when medicine WAS medicine, docs didn’t get sued every week, knew what they were doing, and weren’t in such a rush to “hit the back nine”….
Ahh…the memories.
Get well soon….we miss your pungent social commentary!

Get better soon, you are missed! It’s just not the same without your musings…
