The Brookview neighborhood enjoys higher property values than it otherwise would directly because of it's historic nature, and I believe they also are working on a formal historic designation. Even this designation is a two sided coin, the homeowners enjoy a greater net worth due to their higher property values, and that in turn generates additional property tax revenue. </p> <p>I personally feel that the bridge itself does have architectural value, despite it's "non-select" status. In this case I think it's likely prudent to proceed cautiously in terms of the destruction of a 97 year old structure. Even though it's not likely that this bridge would be repaired, historic guidelines are in place for a reason, and though they may not protect this bridge, they will likely protect a structure that is more desirable. </p> <p>Finally, before we go shouting to the rooftops that we are uselessly spending money, maybe we ought to consider the fact that this bridge is in this condition because in the often short sighted view of saving money, the bridge was not maintained. It's likely that had we spent a comparatively small amount of taxpayer dollars on the maintenance of the bridge, we would not now have to spend a much larger amount of money on a new bridge. </p> <p>Good discussion surrounding this.
